Subaru recall overview:

  • Who: Subaru issued a recall for 95,830 of its vehicles due to an inhibitor switch issue in the 2022 Forester, 2021 Crosstrek, 2021-22 Legacy and 2021-23 Outback vehicles.
  • Why: An improper weld on the inhibitor allows water to seep in, which can cause the inhibitor to stop working.
  • Where: The Subaru rearview camera recall is valid across the United States.

Subaru issued a recall for 95,830 of its vehicles due to a bad weld on the vehicles’ inhibitor switch that can lead to the switch failing.

The Subaru recall impacts 16 of Subaru’s 2022 Forester, 37,295 of the 2021 Crosstrek, 7,149 of the 2021-22 Legacy and 51,470 of the 2021-23 Outback vehicles.

A Subaru investigation found a worn welding jig resulted in an insufficient weld thickness between the stator and cover, which can cause a seal issue that allows water in, the recall says. The welding jig is no longer in use since June 16, 2021.

The leak causes the inhibitor switch to fail, which can lead to the backup lamps not lighting up while in reverse, the rearview camera not displaying properly, the transmission gear selector in the instrument panel not being displayed or the complete inability to start the engine.

No reports of injury, Subaru recall says

Subaru says it has not received any reports of injury related to the recall so far. The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

The automaker began to mail dealer notification letters Nov. 10 and says it will notify owners beginning Jan. 8. Dealers will replace the inhibitor free of charge, and Subaru will reimburse owners for prior repairs, the recall states.

Consumers can reach Subaru of America at (844) 373-6614.

In August, Subaru announced a recall of more than 35,000 of its 2024 Crosstrek and Impreza vehicles, as they can suffer a short circuit, increasing the risk of a crash.
