Trader Joe’s recall overview:

  • Who: Trader Joe’s issued a recall for several food products that contain cotija cheese.
  • Why: The cheese is potentially contaminated with listeria, and is part of a larger dairy recall Rizo-López Foods, the recall says.
  • Where: The Trader Joe’s recall is valid across the United States.

A new Trader Joe’s recall has been issued for several food products that contain cotija cheese due to possible dairy listeria contamination.

The dairy recall covers all lots of these products:

  • Chicken Enchiladas Verde (SKU 58292)
  • Cilantro Salad Dressing (SKU 36420)
  • Elote Chopped Salad Kit (SKU 74768)
  • Southwest Salad (SKU 56077)

The cotija cheese included in the products covered under the recall is part of a larger dairy recall from Rizo-López Foods, which has been identified as a potential source in a nationwide listeria outbreak.

Listeria can lead to serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and those with weakened immune systems.

Healthy individuals are more likely to have short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, according to the recall.

Listeria can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women, the recall says.

No illness reported from Trader Joe’s dairy recall so far

Trader Joe’s says it has not received any reports of illness related to the recall so far. The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Trader Joe’s will give customers a full refund for the recalled products. Customers can contact Trader Joe’s customer relations at 626-599-3817 between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. PT, Monday through Friday.

Trader Joe’s issued recalls in fall 2023 for a scented candle and a trio of food products due to a burn risk and possible contamination with rocks and insects, respectively.
