Benny T’s recall overview: 

  • Who: Vesta Fiery Gourmet Foods is recalling several varieties and lots of its Benny T’s Vesta Dry Hot Sauces. 
  • Why: The hot sauces contain wheat that is not declared on their label, testing from the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services confirmed.
  • Where: The hot sauce recall is effective across the United States.

Benny T’s is recalling several varieties and lots of its Vesta Dry Hot Sauces due to undeclared wheat in the products.

The wheat was discovered in testing from the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, which informed the company on Jan. 4 that the flour on the label does not indicate it is wheat flour.

The Benny T’s recall includes 1.5-ounce glass jars of Vesta Dry Hot Sauce Ghost with UPC 7 94571 99498 0, Vesta Dry Hot Sauce Hot with UPC 7 94571 99497 3, Vesta Dry Hot Sauce Reaper with UPC 7 94571 99490 4, Vesta Dry Hot Sauce Scorpion with UPC 7 94571 99491 1 and Vesta Dry Hot Sauce Very Hot with UPC 7 94571 99499 7.

The affected lot numbers are X001500 (expiration date 09/2024) and FX001582 (expiration date 09/2024) NDC 0078-0110-22.

The Vesta recall hot sauces were distributed between Oct. 1 and Jan. 4 and sold primarily online, in retail stores and in deli cases throughout the United States.

Undeclared wheat can cause dangerous reactions for those who are allergic

Vesta says it has not received any reports of illness related to the recall so far. The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Consuming wheat unknowingly can lead to a severe or life-threatening allergic reactions for those with a wheat allergy, the Vesta recall says.
