Johnson Health Tech Treadmill Recall Overview:

  • Who: Johnson Health Tech is recalling 19,900 of its Matrix Fitness T1X, T1xe, T3x, and T3xh treadmills.
  • Why: The treadmills are being recalled due to a fire hazard posed by the treadmills’ power cord, which has caused seven fires — two resulting in property damage.
  • Where: The recall is effective in the United States and Canada.

Johnson Health Tech is recalling 19,900 of its Matrix Fitness T1X, T1xe, T3x and T3xh treadmills made between 2009 and 2018 due to a fire hazard posed by the treadmills’ power cord.

In a recall notice posted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Johnson Health Tech says the treadmills’ power cord can become loose from its power socket, leading the cord and socket to spark, smoke or melt.

The company says it has received 58 reports of issues related to the cord and socket, including seven reports of fire, two which resulted in property damage. No injuries have been reported, the company says.

The company is also recalling 17 of the treadmills that were sold in Canada.

Ensure Power Cord Completely Inserted Into Power Socket Prior To Each Use Until Repaired

The treadmills, which retail for between $3,400 and $8,900, have a running platform that measures 60 inches long by 20 inches wide, a 33-inch-wide console and a straight power cord with no power cord bracket. Matrix is printed on the treadmill console masts.

The model name and the serial number are located on the connecting bar at the bottom of the machine near the power socket. The treadmills with the following model names and serial number ranges are included in this recall:

  • T1x/T1xe; TM5070901##### through TM5071210#####
  • T3x/T3xe; TM5090901##### through TM5091311#####
  • T1x/T1xe; TM5141006##### through TM5141101#####
  • T1x/T1xe; TM5221105##### through TM5221801#####
  • T3x/T3xe; TM5231006##### through TM5231801#####
  • T3xh; TM5261412##### through TM5261801#####

Johnson Health Tech is urging exercise facilities to ensure that the power cord is completely inserted into the power socket on the treadmills prior to each use until repaired. To schedule a free installation of a power cord bracket, consumers are being told to contact Johnson Health Tech North America. The company says it is contacting all known purchasers directly.

Last year, Peloton had to recall 125,000 of its Tread+ treadmills after it was linked to the death of a child and the injuries of 29 others that were sucked under the machine. The recall came after the company refused to recall the product in April despite CPSC, which had received reports of more than 70 incidents caused by the treadmill.
