Consumers should dispose of recalled cantaloupe, recall says
Consumers are asked to dispose of the affected cantaloupe. The risks of salmonella are highest for young children, elderly and those with weakened immune systems who can get serious or sometimes fatal infections, according to the cantaloupe recall.
Healthy people exposed to salmonella may experience fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain. In rare cases, salmonella can enter the bloodstream and cause arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis, the recall says.
Eagle Produce says it has not received any reports of illness related to the recall so far. The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Consumers can reach Eagle Produce at 800-627-8674 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. PT, Monday to Friday.
In 2015, a Colorado state judge approved wrongful death and personal injury settlements related to the 2011 listeria outbreak traced to contaminated cantaloupe. The listeria outbreak reportedly killed 33 people and sickened more than 140 others.
