Holiday cookies on a plate next to a glass of milk - Publix holiday cookies

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall on Publix holiday cookies because they contain undeclared pecans, a potentially harmful allergen.

Publix and the FDA issued the alert Monday, identifying Publix Bakery’s 20-ounce Holiday Cookie Platter as the product that could contain pecans.

Publix sells these in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. Publix says Florida’s Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, Broward and Monroe counties are not included in the recall

The Publix holiday cookies are packaged in clear plastic with a UPC code of 41415 88690 and are marked with lot W34326 and a best-by date of 10/APR/2021 on the top, according to the FDA recall.

The cookie maker, George DeLallo Co., says a “temporary breakdown” in labeling left some products with pecans to be used in their production.

Publix bakeries partner with DeLallo Italian foods to supply their holiday cookies. The family-owned business, operating for 60 years in Pittsburgh, expanded into “fancy tea cookies” in 2014.

The FDA’s alert urges shoppers who bought these Publix holiday cookies and have pecan allergies to return the product for a full refund or exchange.

Hotlines are available for those with questions. Consumers can call 1-800-433-9100 or 724-925-2222 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST Monday through Friday for additional information, according to WFTV.

The FDA says while no illness or reactions have been reported, people with pecan allergies run the risk of having life-threatening reactions if exposed or inadvertently eat the tree nut.

Experts say there’s often confusion between a pecan allergy and a peanut allergy, with the latter being defined as a legume, but up to 40% of those who are allergic to peanuts also react to at least one type of tree nut, such as a pecan. Either way, cases of anaphylactic shock are most commonly caused by tree nuts or peanuts, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (ACAAI).

Similar to those of a peanut allergy, symptoms of tree nut allergy include abdominal pain, cramps, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty swallowing, itching, nasal congestion, shortness of breath and, on rare occasions, anaphylaxis, according to the ACAAI.

Experts say tree nuts such as pecans are one of the eight most common allergies found in adults and children. A 2010 study showed rates of these allergies are on the rise, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information.

Two years ago, a Seattle teen allergic to peanuts died after reportedly eating a peanut butter-flavored cookie, according to the city’s CBS News affiliate.  Her parents said the wrapper’s label was pulled back and she didn’t see it.

The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 requires products to be clearly labeled if they contain these potentially harmful ingredients.

The ACAAI advises consumers with tree nut allergies to read labels carefully and to see a specialist if a tree nut allergy is suspected.

Emergency medical providers and allergy specialists advise those with serious allergies to seek immediate help if experiencing anaphylaxis, identify the allergen, follow up with a specialist and carry epinephrine for emergencies.
