Albuterol recall overview:

  • Who: Cipla recalled six batches of albuterol inhalers.
  • Why: The inhalers may leak, resulting in not enough of the medication administered per dose.
  • Where: The albuterol recall is active in the United States.

Cipla recalled six batches of albuterol inhalers as the inhalers may leak, potentially leading to a life-threatening situation for asthmatics who rely on the medication.

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration website published the recall July 6. It applies to six batches of Albuterol Sulfate Inhalation Aerosol, 90 mcg (200 Metered Inhalation), manufactured in Nov. 2021. View the exact batch numbers here

Cipla initiated the recall after receiving a complaint about a consumer observing a leak through the inhaler valve, it says.

Out of an abundance of precaution, Cipla recalled another six batches of inhalers manufactured using the same lot of valves, according to the recall notice.

“There is a reasonable probability that failure to deliver the recommended dose to treat the respiratory symptoms of acute asthma exacerbations such as wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath and bronchospasms, due to device defect, may be life-threatening,” the albuterol recall says.

There have been no adverse events reported for the recalled inhalers so far, the recall says. The company is currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Stop using inhalers, albuterol recall states

Cipla distributed the recalled inhalers nationwide to wholesalers and retailers, the recall notice states. The company is notifying its distributors and customers by letter and arranging for return and replacement of all recalled products.

Those who have the recalled albuterol inhalers should stop using them and return them to the place of purchase or discard them, according to the recall.

In related news, albuterol faced a reported shortage last winter due to the respiratory virus season.

Yes and they don’t last as long nor do I get enough to be able to breathe as I have prior ones. I’ve bought many.

Please add me. I have been using this for years and I was wondering why I was having to use my inhaler more often than normal. I’d have more problems breathing with these and finally managed to get a different inhaler.

Please add me. I have been using albuterol for many years. Each of these inhalers last between 30 & 60 days. Even though my insurance company will only cover generic brands, my copay for these is between $200 to 300 each. It is ridiculous that we are paying so much.
