Ford recall overview:
- Who: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened a probe into whether a 2020 Ford recall of vehicles with a brake hose issue was adequate.
- Why: The NHTSA says it has received 50 complaints of front brake hose failures on Ford vehicles despite the recall.
- Where: The recall was nationwide.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating a 2020 Ford recall of nearly half a million vehicles due to a brake hose issue.
On Aug. 8, the NHTSA opened an investigation into whether the 2020 recall was adequate after receiving 50 complaints alleging front brake hose failures on 2013 through 2018 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ vehicles.
“Many of the complaints allege the brake hoses are rupturing, leaking brake fluid and occurring with little to no warning,” the NHTSA said. “Leaked brake fluid can cause a soft brake pedal, increased pedal travel and/or extended braking distances.”
The road safety regulator said it was also aware of one alleged crash as a result of a failed brake hose with no injuries.
Ford said it would cooperate with NHTSA’s probe, Reuters reported.
Probe comes after 2020 Ford recall of nearly 500,000 vehicles
In 2020, nearly 500,000 Ford vehicles were recalled after the company stated a problem was discovered with the brake system. The issue was reportedly a faulty front brake jounce hose.
The hose could rupture and cause the vehicle to leak brake fluid, according to the 2020 Ford recall. Without sufficient fluid, the vehicles could then not brake as quickly, putting drivers at risk for a collision.
At the time, Ford explained drivers would know if there was a problem with their vehicle thanks to their brake warning lights. Ford also told drivers the warning light will come on if there is insufficient fluid in the brake fluid reservoir.
No collisions had been reported at the time in connection with the Ford brake recall, the company said.
The affected models were 2015 to 2018 Ford Edge vehicles made at the Oakville Assembly Plant in Ontario, Canada, from June 25, 2014, to Dec. 21, 2017.
The affected 2016-2018 Lincoln MKX vehicles were produced at the same plant, but between Nov. 11, 2014, and Dec. 21, 2017.
