Hyundai Veloster recall overview:

  • Who: Hyundai recalled over 26,000 Velosters built between 2012 and 2013.
  • Why: The vehicles’ parking sensors could short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire.
  • Where: The Hyundai Veloster recall is active in the United States.

Hyundai recalled more than 26,000 Hyundai Velosters due to concerns their parking sensors could short circuit, increasing the risk of a fire.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website published the recall Feb. 28. It applies to a total of 26,169 Velosters built between 2012 and 2013.

According to the recall, a “high-conductive liquid” may leak into the Veloster’s reverse parking sensor module, short circuiting the system and posing a fire risk.

While there are no reports of crashes or injuries so far, Hyundai received five reports of fires related to the problem, according to Consumer Reports.

The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.

Affected Hyundais to be fixed free of charge, Veloster recall says

All owners of the affected vehicles will be notified through mail by April 29 with instructions to bring their vehicles to a Hyundai dealer for replacement of the fuse and sensor, if necessary, according to the Veloster recall.

The remedy will be offered at no cost to owners for all affected vehicles, regardless of whether the affected vehicles are still covered under Hyundai’s New Vehicle Limited Warranty, the company says.

Additionally, Hyundai will provide owners of affected vehicles reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses incurred to obtain a remedy for the recall condition in accordance with the reimbursement plan submitted to NHTSA on Feb. 24, 2022.

In August, Hyundai and Kia recalled 281,000 vehicles due to a fire risk and warned owners of Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride vehicles to park their cars outside and away from structures as the vehicles can spontaneously catch fire. The notice comes after the companies recalled nearly half a million vehicles in February 2022 for similar reasons.
