- Where: The strawberry hepatitis A recall is active in the United States.
Scenic Fruit Co. has initiated a frozen organic strawberry and frozen organic tropical blend recall due to possible hepatitis A contamination. The berries are sold under multiple brand names at Aldi, Costco, Trader Joe’s and other retailers.
The products are being recalled due to an outbreak of Hepatitis A illnesses.
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration website published the recall March 17. It applies to frozen organic strawberries sold to Costco, Aldi, KeHE, Vital Choice Seafood and PCC Community Markets and frozen organic tropical blends sold to Trader Joe’s. Click here for the specific lot codes.
Hepatitis A is a contagious liver disease that results from exposure to the hepatitis A virus, including from food, the strawberry and tropical blend recall states. It can range from a mild illness lasting a few weeks to a serious illness lasting several months.
In rare cases, particularly in consumers who have a pre-existing severe illness or are immune compromised, hepatitis A infection can progress to liver failure.
Scenic Fruit Co. is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Consumers should destroy product, return for a refund, strawberry recall says
Although hepatitis A has not been detected in the products, they are being recalled out of an abundance of caution, Scenic Fruit Co. says.
“The company has ceased the production and distribution of the product as FDA and the company continue their investigation as to what caused the problem,” the strawberry and tropical blend recall states.
All inventories of the affected lot should be removed from sale. Consumers who have purchased the products are urged to destroy or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund, the recall explains.
Hepatitis A illness typically occurs within 15 to 50 days of exposure and includes fatigue, abdominal pain, jaundice, abnormal liver tests, dark urine and pale stool, the company saidsays
Last year, food safety officials investigated an outbreak of hepatitis A infections in the United States and Canada that may have been linked to fresh, organic strawberries.
