Hyundai agreed to a class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims that certain vehicles were defective and susceptible to theft.Â
The settlement benefits owners and lessees of certain Hyundai vehicles not equipped with an engine immobilizer. Drivers can check their eligibility by entering their vehicle’s VIN on the settlement website.
The class action lawsuit plaintiffs claim Hyundai manufactured defective vehicles that were susceptible to theft and damage. According to the class action lawsuit, owners and lessees suffered financial damage due to resulting thefts or attempted thefts.
Hyundai is a South Korean motor group that sells cars, SUVs and other vehicles.
Hyundai hasn’t admitted wrongdoing but agreed to pay an undisclosed sum to resolve the class action lawsuit.
Under the terms of the Hyundai theft settlement, class members who submit a claim form can receive various benefits based on any total losses, theft, insurance costs or other expenses they incurred as a result of a qualifying theft.Â
Class members who experienced a total loss due to a qualified theft or attempted theft can receive 60% of their vehicle’s Black Book value.Â
Class members who experienced damage to their vehicles or loss of personal property due to a qualifying theft or attempted theft can receive $3,375 or 33% of the Black Book value of their vehicle, whichever is greater.Â
Class members who paid insurance deductibles or increased insurance premiums due to a qualifying theft or attempted theft can receive up to $375.Â
Reimbursement of up to $250 is available for class members who experienced other out-of-pocket expenses due to a qualifying theft or attempted theft.
Some benefits are available only for claimants eligible for the software upgrade. Class members who experienced lost income or childcare costs in order to have the software upgrade installed can receive up to $250 in reimbursement.Â
Class members eligible for the software upgrade may also be eligible to receive up to $50 for the qualifying purchase of a steering wheel lock or up to $350 per key fob purchased, up to two key fobs per vehicle.
Class members who were not eligible for the software upgrade can receive up to $300 for the qualifying purchase of a steering wheel lock, glass breakage alarm, similar anti-theft system or another aftermarket anti-theft system.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is May 3, 2024.
