Omega-3 pet supplement recall overview:
- Who: Stratford Care USA recalled multiple brands of Omega-3 Supplements for cats and dogs.
- Why: The supplements contain potentially elevated levels of Vitamin A.
- Where: The Omega-3 pet supplement recall is active in the United States.
Stratford Care USA issued a recall on multiple brands of Omega-3 supplements for cats and dogs as they have potentially elevated levels of Vitamin A, which has led to dogs exhibiting signs of Vitamin A toxicity.
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) website published the recall March 10. It applies to many brands of supplements, including those of multiple veterinary clinics and animal hospitals. For a full list of the supplements, click here.
Stratford Care recalled the supplements after a report from a customer whose dogs exhibited signs of Vitamin A toxicity after consuming the supplement, according to the Omega-3 recall.
Vitamin A is an essential nutrient for dogs; however, ingestion of elevated levels can lead to health issues depending on the level of Vitamin A and the length of exposure, the recall states.
“Vitamin A toxicity may include general malaise, anorexia, nausea, peeling skin, weakness, tremors, convulsions, paralysis and death,” the recall notice explains.
The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
Supplements distributed through vets, stores nationwide, Omega-3 recall states
Stratford Care distributed the Omega-3 supplements throughout the United States in veterinary clinics, distribution centers, retail stores and online marketplaces such as Amazon and Chewy, the recall states.
The white plastic container containing 60 soft gels states “lot 31133 EXP 04/13/23” and “lot 30837 EXP 10/26/22” on the bottom.
Pet owners who purchased the supplement are asked to immediately stop using it and throw it away in a container where no other animals, including wildlife, can access and consume it.
Veterinary and other retail partners should remove and destroy the affected product from their inventory, the company added.
In other pet supplement news, Zesty Paws faces a class action claiming its supplements for dogs grossly overstate the active ingredients that would support a dog’s health.
