Ford Motor Co. announced a recall for 238,364 of its model year 2020-2022 Ford Explorer SUVs over concerns their rear axle horizontal mounting bolt may fracture and cause the driveshaft to disconnect.
Ford says a disconnected driveshaft could cause the Ford Explorer vehicles to experience a loss of drive power or roll away if the parking brake is not applied, increasing the risk of a crash.
“If the rear axle bolt breaks, the driveshaft or halfshafts may become disconnected, resulting in loss of transmission torque to the rear wheels,” the Ford Explorer recall report states.
Ford recalled some of the Ford Explorer vehicles included in the recall last year over similar concerns, Consumer Reports reports.
Ford expects to begin notifying affected vehicle owners Nov. 6
Ford says it will mail recall notification letters Nov. 6. Owners will be able to take their recalled Ford Explorer SUVs to either a Ford or Lincoln dealer to have their subframe bushing and rear axle bolt replaced.
Ford will also provide a general reimbursement plan to compensate owners for the cost of remedies paid prior to the May recall notification.
A consumer filed a class action lawsuit against Ford earlier this year over claims the automaker failed to disclose that the rear subframe assemblies on its model year 2020 and newer Ford Explorer 2.3L and 3.0L ST vehicles are allegedly defective.

One thought on Ford issues recall for Explorers due to potential driveshaft breakage
I took my 22 Explorer Timberline to the Ford dealer last week
for my 4,400 mile 2nd oil change. I asked the service guy about
this and he said they don’t have the repair parts, and have
been told they won’t be arriving until quarter 2 of 2024. But so
far, everything checked out.
