Gerber baby formula recall overview:
- Who: The Perrigo Co. issued a supplemental recall of certain lots of Gerber Good Start SootheProTM powdered infant formula.
- Why: The Gerber baby formula recall was due to possible presence of chronobacter sakazakii from its Eau Claire, Wisconsin, manufacturing plant.
- Where: The supplemental recall applies to formula that was distributed through its Nashville division.
The Perrigo Co. announced a supplemental recall of some of the Gerber Good Start SootheProTM powdered infant formula distributed through the Nashville Division of Associated Wholesalers Group.
There is a potential presence of chronobacter sakazakii in the formula, according to the recall notice. The bacteria is found in the environment but can cause issues for premature babies or those who have weakened immune systems and are younger than 2 months old, causing “fever, poor feeding, excessive crying or low energy as well as other serious symptoms,” according to the recall.
The Nashville division distributes to independent stores in Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia.
The recalled product include the 12.4-ounce versions of Gerber GoodStart SootheProTM with lot codes 300357651Z, 300457651Z, 300557651Z, 300557652Z, 300757651Z, 300857651Z, 301057651Z, 301057652Z and 301157651Z.
Recall asks consumers to throw away affected Gerber baby formula
The Perrigo Co. says it has not received any reports of illness related to the recall so far. The company is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Consumers are asked to throw away any of the impacted product and can contact Gerber Parent Resource Center on behalf of Perrigo at 1-800-777-7690 anytime for a refund.
Gerber is facing a class action lawsuit arguing it makes “strictly prohibited” nutrient claims on its baby and toddler food to profit from parents’ desire to buy food with health benefits. The company also previously faced a class action lawsuit stating it broke public trust by selling products including toxic heavy metals.
