Air Wick, Hyundai, Kia, Costco, Amazon recalls overview:

  • Who: Air Wick, Hyundai, Kia, Costco and Amazon recalled their respective products this week.
  • Why: These top recalls revolve around product safety and possible risk of harm.
  • Where: The recalls are effective in the United States.

Several popular companies, retailers and manufacturers announced top recalls this week for products that may pose injury to consumers.

Air Wick recalls aerosol can air fresheners

On Nov. 3, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website posted a recall for about 67,000 AirWick aerosol air fresheners. The recall applies to AirWick Fresh New Day aerosol air fresheners in “Fresh Linen” and “Fresh Waters” scents with batch code B22077-NJ and date code 18/03/22.

Parent company Reckitt recalled the air fresheners after it found the batch had missing corrosion inhibitors. This could lead to corrosion and rupture of the metal can, which may expel the contents, posing injury and laceration hazards. It can also result in leakage, posing a risk of skin and eye irritation upon contact.

There have been five reported incidents from the aerosol cans; however, no injuries have occurred.

Reckitt encourages consumers to immediately stop using the recalled air fresheners, wrap the product in several layers of paper and dispose of it. Consumers can contact Reckitt and submit a photo of the recalled product to receive a voucher for a free replacement.

Hyundai, Kia recall Santa Fe, Sportage vehicles

On Oct. 27, Hyundai announced on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website that it added more than 44,000 model year 2018 Santa Fe Sports to its list of recalled vehicles due to fire risk. The expanded list of models joins the 281,000 vehicles Hyundai and Kia recalled in August and the nearly half a million vehicles they recalled in February for similar reasons.

The Santa Fe vehicles have an anti-lock brake system (ABS) module that can malfunction and cause an electrical short, which could result in an engine compartment fire while the car is parked or driving.

Hyundai associated four fires with the defect and encourages owners to park outside and away from structures until the recall repair is complete. Owners can take their vehicles to a Hyundai dealer for a free repair.

Also appearing on our list of top recalls is Kia, which announced a recall for more than 71,000 model years 2008-2009 Sportage vehicles as the engine compartment can catch fire while the vehicle is parked or driving.

While the vehicles are parked or driving, an engine compartment fire originating from around the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) may occur. Drivers may receive a warning of the engine fire in the form of illumination of the ABS warning light, burning/melting smell and/or smoke from the engine compartment.

The company is developing a remedy and expects to mail owner notification letters on Dec. 22, the Kia Sportage recall states. Kia says it will reimburse owners for repair expenses already incurred under Kia’s General Reimbursement Plan filed May 10, 2022.

Costco recalls frozen chicken patties

A recall notice published Oct. 29 on the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) website lists more than 70 tons of chicken patty products sold at Costco.

The chicken patty products were recalled after they were found to potentially contain pieces of hard, clear plastic. The affected products are 80-oz. plastic bag packages containing 20 pieces of “Chicken Patties Breaded Chicken Breast Patties With Rib Meat” with best-by date “08/11/23,” establishment number “P-33901” and lot code “3*2223**” printed on the back of the packaging.

There have been no confirmed reports of injury associated with eating the patties, but FSIS believes the hard plastic pieces could be sharp and possibly cause an injury.

Consumers are encouraged not to consume the product and return to the place of purchase.

Recall announced for Amazon desk chair

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website published a recall notice Oct. 27. for 11,400 Amazon basics desk chairs.

The affected product is an upholstered swivel chair sold in black, brown and white. It has padded armrests and five legs with rolling casters. The recall only includes chairs with a horizontal plastic piece on the bottom of the caster bracket. According to the Amazon recall, the chairs’ leg base can break, posing fall and injury hazards.

There have been 13 reports of chair leg bases breaking, including one report of a minor shoulder injury. Consumers should upload a photo of the chair’s leg base and certify disposal of the chair to Amazon. Upon receipt of the photo and certification of disposal, consumers will receive a full refund to a valid payment method in the consumer’s Amazon wallet or an Amazon gift card.
