Lowe’s class action alleges recalled Kobalt yard tools have dangerous battery defect

Lowe’s class action lawsuit overview:

A new class action lawsuit accuses Lowe’s and Greenworks of selling certain Kobalt-branded power tools that have a dangerous battery defect that poses a serious risk of fire and injury to consumers.

Plaintiff Robby Yu claims the companies designed, marketed, distributed and sold certain Kobalt-branded power tools equipped with defective lithium-ion batteries that can short-circuit when charged through the USB-C port while the batteries are inserted in the tools.

The class action lawsuit comes after Lowe’s and Greenworks recalled 554,780 Kobalt-branded garden tools sold in Lowe’s retail stores and on Lowes.com from January 2026 through May 2026.

Yu wants to represent a nationwide class and California subclass of consumers who purchased the Kobalt tools for personal use and not for resale.

Lowe’s, Greenworks allegedly failed to provide consumers with adequate remedy

Kobalt issued a recall after the companies received 34 reports of batteries producing smoke, sparking or catching fire due to the defect, Yu claims.

Yu argues Lowe’s and Greenworks failed to provide consumers with an adequate remedy for the defect, which he claims was present at the point of purchase and leaves the Kobalt tools unsafe, unfit for use and worth substantially less than represented or warranted.

“Instead of providing a proper remedy, [the] defendants merely instructed consumers to submit a request to arrange a battery replacement,” the Kobalt tools class action lawsuit says.

Yu claims Lowe’s and Greenworks are guilty of unjust enrichment and breach of implied warranties and violated California’s Unfair Competition Law, False Advertising Law and Consumers Legal Remedies Act.

Yu demands a jury trial and requests declaratory and injunctive relief and an award of compensatory, statutory, actual and monetary damages for himself and all class members.

Earlier this year, Lowe’s Home Centers was hit with a class action lawsuit for allegedly failing to disclose that it adds a separate delivery fee to the total price of products sold online.
