southwire electrical outlet boxes recallThe United States Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a recall of the Garvin Pop-Up Electrical Outlet Floor Box Kits over concerns that they can overheat while in use, which can in turn, cause a fire hazard.

The CPSC announced that Southwire, makers of the Garvin Pop-Up Outlet Floor Box Kits announced the recall on Aug. 20, 2019 over worries that the devices could heat up to the point of causing a fire hazard while they were being used.

The Garvin Pop-Up Electrical Outlet Floor Box Kits consist of two electrical receptacles and two USB ports. The CPSC notes that the boxes are designed to be installed into floors. Reportedly, they have a metal lid that opens to reveal the power outlets, and closes when not in use.

The recall affected around 3,000 units. Recalled units include those with a stainless steel finish or a brushed brass finish. The devices were sold through multiple websites, including garvinindustries.com, acdcusa.com, cesco.com, gordonelectricsupply.com, platt.com and usesi.com. They were sold for $90, and were on the market between January 2016 and August 2018.

The CPSC notes that the recall was conducted voluntarily by the company under the CPSC’s Fast Track Recall process.

They were imported by Garvin Industries Inc. of Franklin Park, Ill., and were distributed by Southwire Company LLC of Carrollton, Ga. The devices were manufactured in China.

The recall was issued after Southwire received three reports of the floor boxes overheating. Happily, no injuries have been reported, says the CPSC.
