Recall Check: 25K SOWTECH Espresso Machines Pose Burn Hazard, Warns CPSC

Consumers who enjoy brewing their own espresso drinks at home should make sure they are not using a machine that was recently recalled after dozens of reports that the product’s glass carafe can break and spill hot liquid.  

Nearly 25,000 SOWTECH espresso machines have been recalled by manufacturer LoHi Tech due to concerns that the glass carafe can break during use, potentially burning the user.  

The recall includes SOWTECH Espresso Machines with a Glass Carafe sold online on LoHi Tech’s website and Amazon between March 2017 and October 2020. The espresso machines retailed for $60 each.  

“SOWTECH” is printed in large black type on the metal front panel and “Model CM6811” is printed on a silver label on the bottom of the machine, according to the Consumer Protection Safety Commission’s recall notice.   

“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled espresso machines and contact LoHi Tech to receive a free replacement metal carafe,” states the notice.  

A total of 48 reports of the glass carafe breaking were reported to the company, including five reports of burn injuries.  

Injuries from breaking or shattering glass products can be terrifying and severe. In May, a woman shared a video of her shattered shower door on the social media site TikTok, saying it unexpectedly exploded on her while in use. 

Consumers have taken legal action claiming product defects caused Pyrex dishes to shatter in one class action lawsuit. GE agreed to pay $20 million to settle a shattering microwave class action lawsuit.
