GM has issued a recall for the spare tire jacks on nearly 150,000 Buick Encore and Trailblazer SUVs after reports that they may splinter and even break while in use.
The recall encompasses certain 2020-2022 Buick Encore GX SUVs and 2021-2022 Chevrolet Trailblazers. The automaker says that some of these vehicles were equipped with an emergency spare tire jack that can break if misplaced, potentially causing the vehicle to fall. This dangerous vehicle safety defect puts motorists and bystanders at risk.
GM told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that “although the jack is sufficiently robust when used appropriately and per the included instructions, failures can still occur due to customer usage.”
GM told Consumer Reports that it is aware of 21 reports of failures and one injury caused by the faulty jack and it looks like getting replacement parts will be a problem for the automaker as well.
GM will not begin replacing spare tire jacks in current vehicles until late July, says Consumer Reports. Owners should not use their jack in the event of a flat tire. Instead, they should call either Chevrolet Roadside Assistance Center at 800-243-8872 or the Buick Roadside Assistance Center at 800-252-1112.
In addition, GM cannot find emergency jacks for its new vehicles either and will sell the cars without the part. Owners will be provided with a jack at a later date, according to Consumer Reports.
Top Class Action Lawsuits will continue to report on this and other vehicle safety recalls to help keep consumers informed.
Indeed, more than 880 recalls concerning safety issues affecting 55 million vehicles were reported in 2020 alone. Owners and lessees are encouraged to be aware of any recalls affecting their vehicle to avoid serious safety issues, including spontaneous fires, faulty airbags, and other problems.
Consumers can check to see if their vehicle has been recalled on the NHTSA website.
