A halva recall has been made due to a Salmonella contamination.

Michigan brand Kareem Mart is recalling three types of halva in seven states due to the potential for Salmonella contamination.

The recall affects the 1lb and 2lb Kareem Chef brand “Halva”, “Halva with Pistachio”, and “Halva with Chocolate” products, the FDA announced Friday in a recall alert.

Kareem Mart is not facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.

Halva is a traditional Middle Eastern fudge-like confection made with tahini (sesame seed paste), sugar and spices.

The products could be found in Mediterranean food stores and wholesalers in Michigan, Illinois, Missouri, New York, Ohio, North Carolina and Pennsylvania and were distributed between March last year and February this year.

The FDA said the products have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The organism can cause serious, sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems.

“Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, producing more severe illnesses and infections,” the agency said.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the potential contamination, but Kareem Mart and the FDA are asking customers who purchased the product, which comes in 1lb and 2lb plastic tubs with Best Before date 07-01-2022, to throw it out or return it to Kareem Mart headquarters in Michigan or the place of purchase.

The potential for Salmonella contamination was discovered after routine testing from store samples by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) in Kareem Mart’s home state.

Production of the halva has been suspended while the FDA and Kareem Mart investigate the source of the problem.

Cases of Salmonella contamination have often led to lawsuits in the past. In 2019, a class action lawsuit was filed in California saying Blue Apron’s products were contaminated by Salmonella, and claiming the company did not take proper steps to ensure that contamination did not occur.
