Check your fridges and freezers: Avanza Pasta is recalling 1.1 tons of meat pasta products sold under various brand names because it wasn’t federally inspected.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Saturday Avanza was recalling the pasta products, which were initially shipped to restaurants, distributors, and retail locations in Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin.
The FSIS said the meat and poultry pasta products were produced without the benefit of federal inspection, and “urged” customers not to eat it.
“These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase,” it said in its notice.
There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to eating the products, but anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider, the FSIS said.
Avanza Pasta does not currently face legal action over the pasta products, but Top Class Actions tracks recalls because they sometimes end in class action lawsuits.
The recall includes meat and poultry ravioli and tortellini made from Oct. 5, 2019, to March 12, 2021, sold under a variety of brand names including Ambrosino’s, Conte De Savoia, Frankie’s Deli, Nature’s Best, Prisco’s Family Market, and more.
Check the FSIS website for details of the label and dates to look out for when checking your fridge. The food safety regulator said it was concerned some pastas may be frozen and in consumers’ freezers, especially considering the expiration dates on some of them extend into 2022.
The recall happened after the FSIS discovered the problem during surveillance activities, it said. The products subject to recall do not bear an establishment number nor the USDA mark of inspection.
The FSIS often recalls meat and poultry products that it deems not up to its safety standards. In 2019, more than 2 million pounds of poultry that could have been contaminated with metal was recalled by Simmons Prepared Foods.
Last year, around 43,000 pounds of ground beef products were recalled by Lakeside Refrigerated Services, as they may have been contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.
