More than 95,000 Genesis vehicles recalled over fire risk

More than 95,000 Genesis G70 and G80 sedans from the 2015 through 2021 model years are part of a new recall concerning another fire risk plaguing carmakers Hyundai and Kia.

Hyundai, owner of the Genesis luxury division, is recalling Genesis G70 and G80 vehicles due to an issue with the anti-lock braking system (ABS), which can cause a short circuit and fire, according to Consumer Reports. The automaker has reportedly instructed those with the recalled Genesis vehicles to park them outside and away from structures until they can be fixed.

The recalled vehicles include:

  • 2015-2020 Genesis G80 sedans (over 94,500 recalled)
  • 2019-2021 Genesis G70 sedans (over 500 recalled)

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) safety recall report warns consumers to be on the lookout for signs of fire, including burning smells, smoke, or lights on the dashboard.

“Customers can continue driving these vehicles; however Hyundai recommends parking these vehicles outside and away from structures until the recall remedy is completed. Hyundai plans to notify owners to bring their vehicles to the nearest Hyundai dealership for replacement of the ABS module fuse,” states the report.

The agency’s report goes on to say that repairs will be performed free of charge and the carmaker plans to start notifying owners in May.

Both Hyundai and Kia are owned by the same parent company, according to Consumer Reports, and share design, engineering, and parts. While this is the first recall on Genesis vehicles, both automakers have also issued multiple recalls over fire risk in the past year.

This is not the first legal action taken against Hyundai over vehicle defects. Hyundai agreed to settle five class action lawsuits in Canada over claims it failed to properly address an engine defect that could lead to a car fire this year.

Indeed, just last week, Kia also recalled 380,000 vehicles over a problem with the braking systems in late model Sportages and Cadenzas that could lead to a fire.

Additionally, the NHTSA is currently investigating both automakers after more than 3,000 complaints of vehicle fires were made concerning 2011-2014 Hyundai Santa Fes and Sonatas, 2011-2014 Kia Optimas and Sorentos, and 2010-2015 Kia Souls, notes Consumer Reports.

Although this is not a class action lawsuit, Top Class Actions monitors potentially dangerous vehicle recalls to keep consumers informed of potential vehicle safety defects.

Unless I was to win the lottery or something else or my rich uncle got out of the poor house! So what is it that can can be done if it is that unsafe because it is the only vehicle I have, and it gets me back and forth to the doctors visits an to grocery store! Just paid a whole lot of money for new tires, wheels alignment, oil change! And new Wind shield wipers. And this is crazy, to know!

I own a 2014 Kia Optima and have had several issues where my engine stalls when trying to push gas pedal. Has happened several times while crossing street and was almost hit. I took to Fred Anderson Kia Dealership and I was told that they didn’t find anything wrong. It’s very unusual that it happens with me, but not them. Ummmmmm………..
