TikTok news consumption overview:

  • Who: Recent research from the Pew Research Center revealed a growing number of Americans said they are regularly getting their news from the short-form video sharing platform TikTok.
  • Why: While no reason for the increase was stated, TikTok as of November has around 150 million American users.
  • Where: TikTok is used by consumers nationwide.

A growing number of Americans say they are regularly getting their news from TikTok, according to new research revealed by the Pew Research Center earlier this month.

The amount of American adults who say they get their news from the platform has increased from 3% in 2020 to 14% in 2023, according to Pew, a self-described nonpartisan American think tank.

The reported increase is in contrast to that of other social media platforms, which have either had no change or decline in recent years, according to Pew.

TikTok, which is primarily used for short-form video sharing, is most popular among teenagers and young adults, according to Pew.

Among adults who use TikTok, those age 18 to 29 are the most likely to say they regularly get their news from the platform, with a total of 32% responding that way, according to the research.

43% of TikTok users say they regularly get their news from the platform

Fifteen percent of American TikTok users that are 30 to 49, said they regularly get their news via the platform, compared to 7% for individuals age 50 to 64 and 3% for Americans 65 and older, according to Pew.

In total, 43% of TikTok’s users said they regularly get their news from the platform, a number that is growing from the 33% of users who reportedly said the same in 2022.

Currently, adults in the U.S. who use TikTok are just as likely to get their news from the platform as Facebook users are to get it from that platform, according to Pew.

TikTok users are less likely, however, to get their news from the platform than X users are to get their news from the social media site formerly known as Twitter, according to the research.

In other news involving TikTok, a federal judge in California ruled earlier this month that the company can arbitrate claims it failed to protect the mental health of individuals that were employed as content moderators for the platform.
