A class action lawsuit claims that Hershey downplays the amount of sugar and cholesterol in its One protein bars, while over-selling the amount of dietary fiber.
The One protein bar class action lawsuit was filed by Brittany Sebastian who says she was misled into believing that One protein bars were far healthier than the company advertises.
Sebastian explains that Hershey markets and labels a line of protein bars under the One brand, that are sold in a range of flavors. Allegedly, the front of the bar advertises prominently that the bars contain only one gram of sugar.Â
Additionally, the back of the bars bear further nutrition information, informing consumers that they contain nine grams of dietary fiber and five milligrams of cholesterol, says Sebastian.
However, the One protein bar class action lawsuit argues that the labels — on both the front and the back of the protein bar packaging — misrepresent the nutrition profile of the protein bars.
According to Sebastian, the bars contain far more sugar and cholesterol than advertised and far less dietary fiber. Allegedly, this was discovered via independent laboratory testing conducted on the bars.
Sebastian goes on to argue that the difference between the advertised and actual nutrition profile makes the bar far less healthy than represented.
The One protein bar class action lawsuit explains that sugar is linked to tooth decay, excessive calories, weight gain, high blood pressure, and other health conditions. Allegedly, research indicates that reducing sugar intake can decrease a person’s risk for cardiovascular disease.
The protein bars contain 40 percent more than the advertised amount of sugar, which Sebastian says makes a significant difference to consumers who are conscious of their sugar intake.
The One protein bar class action lawsuit goes on to say that the bars contain 96 percent more than the advertised amount of cholesterol, which also makes them less healthy than advertised. Sebastian states that foods high in cholesterol can increase a person’s risk of heart disease.Â
Additionally, the One protein bar nutrition content class action lawsuit points to the Mayo Clinic who state that foods high in fiber can help people maintain a healthy weight and decrease a person’s risk of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Unfortunately, the One protein bar products reportedly contain 96 percent less dietary fiber than represented.
Sebastian says that she and many other consumers were financially injured by Hershey’s misrepresentations because had they known that the bars contained more sugar and cholesterol and less fiber than advertised, they would not have purchased the bars or would have paid far less than they did.
Allegedly, Hershey knowingly took advantage of consumer preference for healthy foods to entice them into purchasing the protein bars.
In 2018, a similar class action lawsuit was filed, taking issue with the carbohydrate content of One bars.
