The cost of Halloween candy has risen this year due to mounting inflation and supply chain disruptions.Â
Consumers have recently begun spending more money for Halloween-related treats and decorations, according to Axios, which reports that the spooky holiday season is the most profitable for candy sales.Â
Among the Halloween candies that will cost more this year are mainstays such as Starburst, Butterfinger, Kit Kat, Twix, Snickers, Skittles and Sour Patch Kids.Â
Changes in Halloween candy price range from a 7% increase for Butterfinger to a 42% increase for the cost of Skittles, reports Axios.Â
Planned household spending for the Halloween season has reportedly decreased this year, meanwhile, dipping from $102.74 billion in 2021 to $100.45 billion in 2022, according to a survey released by the National Retail Foundation.Â
Inflation for Halloween candy mostly in-line with inflation for food in generalÂ
The inflated prices for Halloween candy are mostly in line with the levels of inflation seen for food in general, however, with only Skittles and Starburst seeing a significantly higher jump, according to Datasembly analysis, reports Axios.Â
Despite their higher increase in cost, Skittles and Starburst still remain cheaper than other popular Halloween candies such as Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Snickers and Twix, among others.Â
The reason for the higher increase in the price of Starburst is also due to the fact that its manufacturer Mars Wrigley has a particularly vulnerable supply chain when it comes to weather, including the uncertainty of hurricane seasons, reports Axios.Â
In July, Mars faced a class action lawsuit from a consumer arguing its Skittles candies contain the toxin titanium dioxide, which the consumer claims makes the popular candies unsafe for human consumption.Â
Mars has allegedly committed to phasing out the use of titanium dioxide in its products, however the consumer behind the class action lawsuit argues it has yet to do so.Â
