Campbell’s V8 Juices Overview:

  • Who: Campbell Soup Company is facing a class action lawsuit for allegedly violating California’s unfair competition laws.
  • What: Consumers allege the company markets its V8 juices as beneficial to health, when they increase risks of heart disease, diabetes, and all-cause mortality.
  • Where: The class action is pending in California district court.

Campbell preys on consumers’ desires for healthy food by falsely advertising its V8 juices as being healthy, when in reality they increase risks of heart disease, diabetes, and all-cause mortality, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Kyle Banta Yoshida, Anthony Mancuso, and Ashley Mistler filed the false advertising lawsuit in California, alleging that Campbell Soup Company was violating California’s unfair competition laws by marketing the juices as beneficial to health, with claims such as “Boost Your Morning Nutrition” and “healthy greens.”

“These and the other representations and omissions of material facts, however, are false and misleading because consuming fruit juices like the V8 Juice Blends, due to their sugar content, increases the risk of metabolic disease,” the group argues.

They say that scientific evidence proves consumption of juice is associated with increased health risks due to its high levels of sugar. Excess sugar consumption leads to metabolic syndrome by stressing and damaging crucial organs, the lawsuit states.

“Metabolic disease has been linked to type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, polycystic ovary syndrome, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and chronic kidney disease,” the claim explains.

In a recent six-year study of more than 13,000 people aged 45 years and older, each additional 12-oz serving per day of fruit juice was associated with a 24 percent higher all-cause mortality risk, the group states in the claim.

Yoshida, Mancuso, and Mistler say that when they bought the V8 juices, they were unaware of the extent to which consuming high amounts of free sugar would adversely affect their health.

They argue that Campbell knows consumers such as themselves are seeking out healthy food and beverage options, and in turn employs a strategic marketing campaign for its juices “that is intended to appeal to consumers interested in healthful foods and thereby increase Campbell’s sales and profits.”

“On the V8 website, for example, Campbell claims that its ‘V8 Fruit & Vegetable Blends are a healthy beverage option for those looking for a perfect blend of vegetables…,’” the claim states.

They are suing the company on behalf of other California consumers and are seeking an order of enjoinment and damages.

This isn’t the only legal action Campbell is facing over alleged false advertising of the sugar content in its products. In August, the food manufacturer was hit with a class action lawsuit filed by consumers that purchased Goldfish crackers labeled as containing “0g Sugars.” Lead plaintiffs, Denise Cleveland and Lanna Rainwater, say that Goldfish cracker manufacturer, Pepperidge Farm and parent company Campbell Soup, misled consumers into thinking the snacks are low in calories and contain no sugar, when in reality they do.
