Jennie O Turkey Recall Due to Salmonella

It’s been a busy year for food recalls. Concerns of E. coli contamination led to a recall of romaine lettuce, and 7,000 cases of queso dip were recalled due to concerns of botulism poisoning.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Salmonella bacteria are responsible for 1.2 million illnesses and 23,000 hospitalizations in the U.S. each year. Of those who become ill, nearly 450 die of the infection, which causes diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps that start 12 to 72 hours after infection. Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, chills, headache and blood in the stool.

Salmonella infections usually last four to seven days, and while many people recover without treatment, many others need medical assistance. At particular risk are the very young, the elderly, and people who have suppressed immune systems due to illness or organ transplants.

Salmonella bacteria are found naturally in the intestinal tract of humans, animals and birds. Salmonella contaminates food when the butchered prey’s feces is mixed into raw meat and poultry, which sometimes inadvertently occurs during butchering and processing. Foods also become tainted when people don’t wash their hands properly after using the restroom, changing diapers, or petting reptiles and birds.
