Ground Turkey Recall May Be More Expansive Than ExpectedA ground turkey recall could be much more expansive than consumers currently expect, according to health investigators at the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Some individuals reported getting sick after eating Jennie-O ground turkey. These reports led to a ground turkey recall associated with the Salmonella outbreak.

The nationwide ground turkey recall has grown significantly because investigators have now reportedly added a fifth item to the list of Jennie-O turkey products that could have been affected by the Salmonella.

Salmonella can cause serious illness and often these kinds of recalls are initiated after many people have gotten sick. Consumers who have any form of affected ground turkey should be aware of the risks, including those who have previously bought the turkey and then froze it for future use. Getting rid of this affected turkey is crucial for preventing illness.

The total amount involved in the ground turkey recall has now grown from 91,000 pounds to 147,000 pounds, according to the Food and Inspections Service run by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The ground turkey recall is associated with an outbreak with the Reading strain of Salmonella. More than 164 infections across 35 states have been reported to the Centers for Disease Control in this ground turkey recall. This includes one fatality in California and 64 illnesses.

A number of different retailers have been selling the products associated with the ground turkey recall including those across Indiana, Arizona, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Texas, Wisconsin, Oklahoma and Michigan. The Food and Inspections Service has undertaken the investigation responsibilities and will continue to update the list as more details become available about the ground turkey recall.

Salmonella has also been detected in raw turkey pet food as well as in live turkeys which could be an indication that the spread of the bacteria runs across the turkey industry.

Salmonella spread through food is reportedly responsible for at least one million illnesses every single year and certain individuals are vulnerable to serious impacts than others. Individual with weak immune systems, the elderly and children under five are much more likely to be hospitalized as a result of the kind of Salmonella issues associated with the ground turkey recall.

In addition to the states named above, a number of other different locations had the products named in the ground turkey recall available for sale, including North Carolina, California, New Mexico, Ohio, New York, Nevada, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Utah.

Some of the most common symptoms of Salmonella infection tied to the ground turkey recall can include abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and fever. Someone who is otherwise healthy can suffer these conditions and symptoms as much as a week.
