Fake USDA Inspection Sticker Recall Overview:

- Why: The empanadas were found to be made without proper federal inspection and were falsely labeled with a USDA inspection marker.
- Where: The recall is nationwide but the products were originally shipped to Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Ohio.
SAS Foods Enterprises Inc. had to recall approximately 3,768 pounds of its frozen chicken and beef empanada products after it was discovered they were made without federal inspection and were packaged with a false USDA inspection label.
The recall announcement was made by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), which said it received an anonymous tip and began an investigation.
Frozen Empanadas Recalled for Fake USDA Inspection Label
The affected SAS Foods products were frozen, fully cooked chicken and beef empanadas produced between Jan. 1, 2020 and Sept. 11, 2021, according to the FSIS.
The empanadas are packaged in either clear plastic containers or 1-lb zip-lock bags and labeled “SAS Food EMPANADAS DE POLLO CHICKEN PATTIES,” and “SAS Food EMPANADAS DE CARNE BEEF PATTIES.”
The frozen empanadas were shipped to retailers in Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Ohio, according to the recall announcement.
There have been no reports of illness or adverse reactions, says the FSIS, which is urging consumers to check their freezers for the products and to either throw them away or return them to their place of purchase.
The FSIS says it “routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks,” to make sure that recalled products are no longer available to the public.
The government agency instigated a July recall of more than 8 million pounds of Tyson brand ready-to-eat chicken products after they were linked to listeriosis.
