Sausage recall issued over possible allergens.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently announced a Class I sausage recall after officials were made aware the product’s labeling failed to disclose the sausage contains cheese, a known allergen that can be dangerous for some consumers.

According to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, there is mozzarella cheese in Teton Waters Ranch Polish Sausage, a ready-to-eat, fully cooked sausage, even though the ingredient is not listed on the product’s label or packaging. The voluntary sausage recall involved about 1,645 pounds of the meat, which has been shipped to stores in California, Colorado, Indiana, Maryland, Maine, New York, and Oregon.

The mislabeled sausage was produced by Courage Production on Oct. 9. The specific items being recalled are the 10-ounce vacuum packed packages of four Teton Waters Ranch Polish links from lot number 202831. The affected products are stamped with a “Use or Freeze By” date of Jan. 8, 2021 and “Est. 6024” on the side of the package, the inspection service says.

A Class I recall is issued when a health hazard situation exists in which “there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death,” according to the USDA’s guidelines.

Sausage recall issued over possible allergens. The sausage recall was initiated after the company was informed that a consumer had lodged a complaint about the Polish sausage. The customer allegedly reported the Teton Waters Ranch Polish Sausage they purchased was found to contain mozzarella cheese and red bell peppers, neither of which was included in the product’s list of ingredients or noted as a possible ingredient anywhere on the package.

At the time the sausage recall was announced, the inspection service alert said there had been no reports of consumers having any adverse reactions or medical emergencies due to eating the meat.

Those who have a dairy allergy typically experience mild symptoms immediately after consumption, including hives, wheezing, an itching or tingling sensation of the lips and mouth, swelling of the lips and mouth, tongue and throat, coughing or shortness of breath, or vomiting, according to the Mayo Clinic. Some symptoms take longer to develop and include abdominal cramps, diarrhea, runny nose, or watery eyes.

In extreme cases, milk can cause anaphylaxis – a life-threatening reaction that causes a person’s airways to constrict, threatening suffocation, the Mayo Clinic warns. It is among the top three most common triggers for anaphylaxis in humans.

Due to the high risk, the inspection service said it “is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ freezers.” Anyone who bought the Teton Waters Ranch Polish Sausage links is being urged by the government agency not to consume them.

“These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase,” the sausage recall says.

Consumers who have questions about the sausage recall should contact Shane Osterthaler, Director of Food Safety at Courage Production at (707) 422-6300, the Food Safety and Inspection Service said.
