Arlo security camera class action overview:

  • Who: A security camera customer is suing Arlo Technologies.
  • Why: The plaintiff says Arlo is removing a cloud storage feature on the cameras that consumers paid for.
  • Where: The Arlo security camera class action was filed in a Michigan federal court.

Arlo Technologies is taking away certain cloud storage features of its security cameras that consumers paid for, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Lonn Rider filed the class action lawsuit against Arlo Technologies Inc. on Jan. 12 in a Michigan federal court, alleging violations of state and federal consumer laws.

According to the lawsuit, the company made and sold home security cameras under the Arlo brand with the marketing, “7 days FREE Cloud Recordings.”

Arlo promised to give customers access to motion- and audio-triggered recordings

from the previous seven days for free, the lawsuit states, adding the words, “and the plan never expires!” to its marketing.

However, Arlo has decided to take away this feature of its product by recently eliminating free seven day cloud storage, as reported by “The Verge” on Jan. 2, 2023, the lawsuit states.

Arlo sold cameras at a premium price due to cloud storage offering, lawsuit states

The promise of a cloud recording of security footage was common to all varieties of Arlo cameras and a key differentiator in the market for such remote home security cameras, the lawsuit states.

The company was also aware that “Free Cloud Storage” was significant to prospective purchasers, allegedly stating, “Why commit to a long-term contract or pay expensive monthly subscription fees? Arlo can save you hundreds of dollars a year,” Rider says

“Arlo purchasers expected cloud storage was part of the deal when they purchased their higher-priced Arlo cameras and did not expect this to be revoked, certainly not at such an early time relative to their continued functionality.”

As a result of the allegedly false and misleading representations, the Arlo cameras are sold at premium prices beginning at $75, the lawsuit states.

Rider seeks to represent a class of Michigan consumers who bought the Arlo security cameras, plus a consumer fraud multi-state class of consumers from South Dakota, Wyoming, Idaho, Alaska, Iowa, Mississippi, Arkansas, Kansas, Arizona, and Utah.

He is suing for breach of state consumer laws, breach of warranty, fraud and unjust enrichment, and seeks certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial.

Meanwhile, in 2021 Ring was hit with a class action lawsuit alleging the maker of the online security system unfairly hides a monthly service fee from buyers, even though the system is rendered useless if customers do not pay the fee.

  1. Jason says:

I purchased 4 cameras (2 Pro 4s and 2 Ultra 2 cameras), 2 hubs, 8 batteries, and the camera doorbell. I quickly learned Arlo is not the company I once bought cameras from approximately a decade prior (those were good and offered free cloud storage). These new cameras came with the promise of free cloud storage and/or local storage but that is inaccurate, the storage does not work without a subscription. I paid for a subscription but even with a subscription the product is nearly useless and the customer service is horrible. I have removed and reinstalled all the cameras more times than I can count (at their recommendation since the cameras rarely work as advertised). I always make sure the firmware is up to date, have reset everything to factory settings numerous times and reinstalled (again at their recommendation but nothing helps this garbage to work). I have several customer service interaction logs that span approximately a year (since the purchase) and even had one camera replaced but the system really doesn’t work. I terminated our subscription and have tried the local storage option but cameras will not record to local storage (USB drive or micro SD) which seems to be a recurring issues since I’ve read many unresolved forums about this problem. I wish I had known the cameras will not work without a subscription before I spent nearly $1500 on this system. Honestly, it really didn’t work even when we had a subscription. Arlo sells a good story but that’s about the only thing they offer. The hardware is garbage, the software doesn’t work, and the customer service is horrible. At this point I don’t know what Arlo has except a reasonable facsimile of a camera which might help to deter criminals (you can but a fake camera for a couple bucks and save hundreds). However, rest assured that if something happens on your property and you have Arlo, there will be no video evidence.

  2. Cass Marshall says:

I also would like to see them confronted about how I MUST receive a phone call every time my doorbell rings and how I MUST have notifications enabled in order for me to access the app whenever I want. I can not have notifications turned on for every time a movement is made on my camera. My husband received 100 notifications within 2 hours. He has his phone on silent and now it’s impossible to get a hold of him for this reason. I would have NEVER spent hundreds on cameras and the doorbell if I knew I couldn’t use the app without enabling notifications. None of that was advertised. My cameras are useless to me now as I can not even access the videos without my husband sending me a code first.

  3. Cordula Mellor says:

I purchased Arlo ultra 2 security camera system in May 2022 bc it was advertised with free cloud storage. I purchased 1gb storage card for local storage but Arlo Base doesn’t let me.
Besides that I ended up paying $12+ monthly prescription for any recording.
I have invested too much money for the system and accessories.
    Customer service is absolutely horrible.
And the system is constantly having issues every time there’s an update the batteries go dead or maybe the power indicator was never accurate.

    1. Cordula says:

      Thank you!

    2. Jason says:

I concur and have spoke with “customer service” numerous times about this issue. In fact a few times they mentioned that it’s a known software error. I install a new battery and within a day it shows 10% or dead. I put it on the charger and can see that it was nearly full. This happens with all our cameras and frankly I just expect to replace my batteries every day or two (I bought extra batteries to keep charged because it’s so bad). It’s very frustrating because we had our cameras located in good positions where I need a ladder to access them and some were once a challenge to get to but they really don’t work so I removed them to avoid climbing a ladder every few days. Wyze cameras are pretty good so far. We have been replacing our Arlo junk

  4. GP says:

Bought 3 cameras in 2020. Never worked as claimed. I could pull up to my house in my truck walk into the house & no video recording. Only sound of the door closing. Support is a joke. Can Only chat to them for hours & hours until you give up. Look at other cameras. 09/2023

  5. Myron Jefferson says:

I purchased this system to provide surveillance around my home. I also paid for a 1 year $99.99 cloud service on January 3, 2023 which ended in March only three months. I was told that’s what I paid for. July this year I paid $209 for a two year cloud service. Why has that service just ended a week ago? This is ridiculous!

  6. Robin Cole says:

Bought Arlo pro 2 – 5 camera with free cloud recording

  7. Mike Peters says:

    I would like to join.
    Cameras occasionally work.
Cloud storage often doesn’t work. Told me cameras were at end of life but if I paid them they would work again.

  8. Steven Roy says:

I am disappointed with Arlo as well. Bought 4 cameras and a subscription. Cameras lose sync, app is garbage. The subscription offers little to no value, after my subscription ends I would have gladly just switched to the cloud based free version….guess that is not an option now. Company should refund everyone everything.

  9. matt says:

Arlo sucks as a company with ridiculous support, warranty, and exchange policies. it is VERY clear that the support representatives and policies are set up to intentionally dissuade customers from pursuing support, warranty or exchanges. Customers have to submit multiple support tickets to get a warranty or exchange. I’ve had this system for less than a year and its one of the worst purchases I’ve made. I will never buy another arlo product.

  10. Sky Hill says:

I have not realized a difference but if this happens I would agree false advertisement. Please include me.
