Arlo security camera class action overview:

  • Who: A security camera customer is suing Arlo Technologies.
  • Why: The plaintiff says Arlo is removing a cloud storage feature on the cameras that consumers paid for.
  • Where: The Arlo security camera class action was filed in a Michigan federal court.

Arlo Technologies is taking away certain cloud storage features of its security cameras that consumers paid for, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Lonn Rider filed the class action lawsuit against Arlo Technologies Inc. on Jan. 12 in a Michigan federal court, alleging violations of state and federal consumer laws.

According to the lawsuit, the company made and sold home security cameras under the Arlo brand with the marketing, “7 days FREE Cloud Recordings.”

Arlo promised to give customers access to motion- and audio-triggered recordings

from the previous seven days for free, the lawsuit states, adding the words, “and the plan never expires!” to its marketing.

However, Arlo has decided to take away this feature of its product by recently eliminating free seven day cloud storage, as reported by “The Verge” on Jan. 2, 2023, the lawsuit states.

Arlo sold cameras at a premium price due to cloud storage offering, lawsuit states

The promise of a cloud recording of security footage was common to all varieties of Arlo cameras and a key differentiator in the market for such remote home security cameras, the lawsuit states.

The company was also aware that “Free Cloud Storage” was significant to prospective purchasers, allegedly stating, “Why commit to a long-term contract or pay expensive monthly subscription fees? Arlo can save you hundreds of dollars a year,” Rider says

“Arlo purchasers expected cloud storage was part of the deal when they purchased their higher-priced Arlo cameras and did not expect this to be revoked, certainly not at such an early time relative to their continued functionality.”

As a result of the allegedly false and misleading representations, the Arlo cameras are sold at premium prices beginning at $75, the lawsuit states.

Rider seeks to represent a class of Michigan consumers who bought the Arlo security cameras, plus a consumer fraud multi-state class of consumers from South Dakota, Wyoming, Idaho, Alaska, Iowa, Mississippi, Arkansas, Kansas, Arizona, and Utah.

He is suing for breach of state consumer laws, breach of warranty, fraud and unjust enrichment, and seeks certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial.

Meanwhile, in 2021 Ring was hit with a class action lawsuit alleging the maker of the online security system unfairly hides a monthly service fee from buyers, even though the system is rendered useless if customers do not pay the fee.

Arlo sucks! I definitely want in on this. I own 4 cameras cost me nearly 900.00. I purchased 4 new cameras for my mom for Christmas. She hardly had the opportunity to enjoy them and poof! No more access without paying 10.00 per camera. I am so mad they took advantage of us

I would like to opt-in on the class action lawsuit. We have 5 cameras, and doorbell and bought Arlo over the competition because of the promise of perpetual 7-day FREE cloud storage. The floodlight will not record ANYTHING without being on a paid subscription plan.

I have 12 camera’s pro2, 2 are brand new. What gives Arlo the right to EOL (end of life) the camera’s. When I purchased the 1st set there was no eol. I believe this eol 1st started in March 22? Of 2023. Not legal all. I purchased the 1st camera kit I 2017. If they I will have invested over $2500 on all accessories AZ well!

I had a Live Chat with an Arlo agent on Feb 2 after receiving their second email regarding the End-of-Life Policy on the VMC4030 Pro cameras. I had several questions which they answered but not necessarily all to my satisfaction. My hope was to get a little financial relief on camera accessories (e.g. batteries and charger) and/or Secure Plan subscription for new cameras that I thought had to be purchase since I was losing firmware updates and 7-day cloud storage with my existing cameras which they re-iterated would be lost in the Feb 2 chat. The bottom line….Arlo was not willing to help me with my request. I ended up purchasing new Pro 4 cameras on Feb 3 to replace my soon-to-be-obsolete VMC4030 cameras. The new cameras were delivered, charged, and then mounted while the older cameras discarded in the trash. I then discover after getting up and running with my new Pro 4 cameras that Arlo revised their EOL policy (dated Feb 10) that would have given my ‘just thrown away’ VMC4030 cameras a new leash on life. You can guess my shock. I contacted Arlo on Feb 22 and had another Live Chat with an agent expressing my dismay on the EOL Policy revision that was release only days after the purchase of new cameras. I again requested some out-of-pocket relief for camera accessories and/or Secure Plan subscription. Their typical response, including “I understand”…. “sorry for the inconvenience”….“we’ll get to you via email” turned out to be just more words. One month went bye and I heard absolutely nothing. I had another Live Chat with an Arlo agent on March 20. Their non-sympathetic response was…..we understand your situation, but am sorry they cannot help me with my request. I now have new cameras and also now forced to pay for a subscription plan that has cloud storage. This is not a way to run a business.

I bought the Arlo set w/3 cameras. It has written on the box 7 days of FREE cloud recordings. Please keep me updated on lawsuit.

  6. Angela Burris says:

I recently upgraded my original Arlo cameras but wasn’t informed that the 7 day recording storage would be obsolete this year. I would have NEVER purchased new cameras if I knew I wouldn’t have recordings to review. What’s the point of having it alert me to motion if I can’t review a video? I used that a lot when I was away from my home and wanted to see what triggered the camera. Now the cameras are useless. False advertising at its best. They could have at least allowed a free 24 hour expiration on videos so it would still record and allow you to view and/or download and save if needed. Now you have to pay for it to record? I wish I was in one of the states in the Class Action so I could join. If Missouri is ever added I would be happy to throw my name and support in.

  7. Jack says:

Arlo is scam in every way, cameras are not live they have a major delay, audio is complete garbage, bought the essential cameras thinking they would work like the arlo pro and then less then a month they stop reporting and make you buy a subscription which was not advertised, now these cameras are paper weights. This company needs to be put out of business selling expensive cameras that or worthless.

  8. Stephen Mauersberg says:

I have 4 Arlo cameras and 2 of their base stations, purchased back about 5 years ago on the basis of the 7 day free cloud storage feature(no charge), spent roughly $600. About a month ago, I received an email from Arlo informing me that that my cameras will hit EOL later this year and that I will need to buy new cameras and pay for a cloud based storage subscription going forward.. This is clearly a bait and hook tactic by them. Is there anyway to expand this class action to NY residents? I would love to join this suit.

  9. Fabian Chapur says:

I purchased 5 cameras all together based on the functions and it was over 500.00. Also batteries died very fast which is also advertised as rechargeable.

  10. Murray says:

Purchased Arlo Pro 4 cameras to replace Arlo Pro 2 series because they said they are retired. The Arlo 2 stop recording and I was able to see clips for 7 days via the APP. Once new cameras were purchased from Sams club, was told by Arlo Tech that I need a hub to see and save my recordings. Purchased a Hub but cameras still would not sync. Then was charged $199 tech fee to add cameras to my wifi and was told I did not need a hub anymore. Still could not see video recordings. Was then informed i am required to purchase a multiple camera plan to see the videos on the app and they would be stored in a cloud. What they did not share was the cloud stores for 30 days. The video clips are only for 120 seconds. Ended the subscription and was just told I will never see any of the video clips without putting subscription in place again. Arlo has misrepresented their product as a viable security system as well as mislead consumers with not providing full disclosure of how a consumer will not see any videos without paying more money. these cameras and not cheap and I want all consumers to be fully refunded and compensated for the BS.
