The class action lawsuit claims the maker of the online security system unfairly hides a monthly service fee from buyers, even though the system is rendered useless if customers do not pay the fee.

Lead plaintiffs Brandon Jack and Jean Alda bought two different Ring doorbell security camera systems, costing about $450, in 2017. Nowhere on the box were buyers alerted a monthly subscription would be required, they said. 

The initial complaint alleges this contrasts with the first line of Ring video doorbell security cameras sold in stores. “Ring Video Doorbell 1,” as it is named in the initial complaint, was introduced to the public in 2013 and is still sold in physical stores for about $100. 

According to the Ring Doorbell class action lawsuit, that product’s box clearly notifies shoppers the Ring video doorbell requires a $3 a month fee to access its online streaming features. 

“The fact that such notice and disclosure was expressly placed by Defendant on the outside of the sealed box of the Ring Video Doorbell 1 — a product which is still being sold today — shows that Defendant considered this information to be material to consumers …,” the class action lawsuit says. 

Jack and Alda allege this fee information should be clear on all of the Ring video doorbell security systems because it’s “nothing more than an expensive electronic alternative to looking out one’s window” without the ability to record or pull up video. 

These features are essential to the Ring video doorbell’s value, Jack and Alda argue, and are a major reason people buy them. 

Beyond pricing issues, Ring customers in another class action lawsuit against the company claim it violates privacy and has been known to provide data to law enforcement agencies.

    We have had our Ring video doorbell for several years and we never once paid for a subscription fee to Ring. We were always able to see our video events. Sometime in 2023, we were no longer able to see our video events and now the app tells us we have to purchase a subscription to see OUR OWN videos! We would like to be added to this class action lawsuit. This shady business practice must be stopped!

    I would like to be added to this suit. On top of the high price of the two ring doorbell I bought at home depot I then found out I had to pay a uearly fee just to use them.

    I would also like to be added to this. When I bought this system that I have paid hundreds for, I had no idea my cameras would be rendered useless unless I pay a high fee to have them record the video.

      I am to I feel like the camera worthless amazon I have another problem I have been fighting with them about now they keep going into my bank account with out my permission can’t exsplain for what the only way they got my card number they took it from Amazon account how I deleted it they put it back on closed account got new cars they did it july again I’m sick of them

        Add me to law suit each time call they take me thru so to adentify who I am but don’t have a problem going into my bank account I’m not on any auto pay I never get any emails stating anything about change my bank is getting tired of same problem

    Not only that, but I was an early adopter of Ring. I replaced a doorbell that was less than a year old because it would not take a charge and wouldn’t even boot up, and was told I had to cancel my current subscription in order to add the replacement doorbell to it. My previous plan was $39.99 for two doorbells per year. New plan, I have to buy home protection for $100 per year.

    Like others, many times I have tried to pull up video of when I knew someone should have activated the motion sensing, because I have been there, seen them with my own eyes, and nothing.

    So now I’m left to abandon my purchases and subscriptions, and replace with new technology or find a way to tap into the proprietary software just to get what I need from it.

    I bought these devices to replace a DVR CCTV system I didn’t have to maintain and was fine paying for the monthly service until it didn’t function correctly. When I first found it, I thought, hey best of both worlds…. I have a doorbell and motion sensor, and ability to view video remotely. Great.

    At this point, I’m better off just throwing up a NAS on my network, and finding an outdoor wireless camera solution that will upload video and keeping a hard drive attached to my router to upload to / view from.

      Me too! Live view is useless when someone approaches by the time it alerts you they are long gone and you don’t even get a video from a moment ago.
