Benzene Aerosol Spray Product Recalls Overview:

  • Who: A number of recalls have occurred over the presence of benzene in aerosol spray products, including deodorant, sunscreen and dry shampoo, among others.
  • Why: Benzene is a known human carcinogen that has been linked to blood disorders and cancers such as leukemia.
  • Where: The recalls are nationwide.

Companies have been recalling a number of aerosol and cosmetic products recently due to the presence of the chemical benzene, a known human carcinogen.

Benzene contamination can occur during the manufacturing process, meaning the chemical is not listed as part of the official ingredients, leaving consumers in the dark.

Exposure to benzene has been linked to a number of adverse health effects, including blood disorders and cancers such as leukemia.

The widespread benzene contamination came to light following a study released last May by Valisure, an independent analytical pharmacy, which discovered a number of cosmetic, aerosol and other products contained the cancer-causing chemical.

Valisure would later write a letter of petition to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, imploring the agency to recall products found to be contaminated with benzene.

In addition to a wave of class action lawsuits in the wake of the study, a number of recalls have also taken place. Here are a few:

Secret Recalls 10 Aerosol Antiperspirant Spray Products

Secret recalled 10 of its aerosol antiperspirant spray products last month due to benzene contamination.

The recall, which the antiperspirant manufacturer said it was conducting voluntarily and out of an “abundance of caution,” includes products from its Aerosol Powder Fresh, Fresh Collection and Outlast Invisible Sprays.

Secret did reassure consumers, however, that, based on cancer risk assessments published by the Environmental Protection Agency, the levels of benzene found in its products would not be expected to cause health problems.

Procter & Gamble Recalls 32 Brands Dry Shampoo, Conditioner

Earlier this month, Procter & Gamble recalled 32 brands of dry shampoo and conditioner  sold under brands including Herbal Essences, Aussie, Pantene, Waterl<ss, Hair Food and Old Spice.

P&G initiated the recall after reviewing its portfolio of aerosol products, following the reports of widespread benzene contamination.

The company found that, while none of its products listed benzene as an ingredient, there was an unexpected level of benzene found in its propellant.

“We detected benzene in aerosol dry shampoo spray products and aerosol dry conditioner spray products. Nothing is more important to us than the safety of the consumers who use our products and the quality of the products we ship,” the company said in its recall notice

Johnson & Johnson Recalls Neutrogena, Aveeno Sunscreens

In July of last year, Johnson & Johnson recalled five separate Neutrogena and Aveeno brand sunscreens due to the presence of benzene.

J&J initiated the recall after it was hit with multiple class action lawsuits in the wake of the Valisure study.

The sunscreen products in the recall included Neutrogena Beach Defense, Neutrogena Cool Dry Sport, Neutrogena Invisible Daily defense, Neutrogena Ultra Sheer and Aveeno Protect + Refresh.

J&J said the sunscreens were found to contain “low levels” of benzene. It advised retailers and distributors to halt the sale of the products.

Coppertone Recalls 12 Of Its Aerosol Sunscreen Spray Products

In October, Coppertone voluntarily recalled 12 of its aerosol spray sunscreen products after it discovered they contained benzene.

Among the sunscreen products included in the recall were the company’s Coppertone Pure & Simple SPF 50 5.0 oz. aerosol sunscreen spray, Coppertone Pure & Simple Kids SPF 50 5.0 oz. aerosol sunscreen spray and its Coppertone Sport Mineral SPF 50 5.0 oz. aerosol sunscreen spray, among others.

The company reassured consumers at that time that it had not received any reports of adverse events related to the recall.

In addition to the recalls, a number of class action lawsuits have been filed against numerous companies in the wake of the Valisure study, including Prestige Consumer Healthcare, CVS and Walmart, among others.
