Coppertone Sunscreen Recall Overview:

  • Who: Coppertone is recalling 12 lots of aerosol sunscreen spray products.
  • Why: Coppertone identified the presence of benzene, a human carcinogen, in the affected products.
  • Where: The recall is nationwide.

Coppertone, owned by Beiersdorf, is voluntarily recalling 12 lots of Coppertone aerosol sunscreen spray products manufactured between the dates of Jan. 10, 2021, and June 15, 2021, according to a press release. Coppertone has identified the presence of benzene, a human carcinogen, in these lots of products.

The recalled products are Coppertone Pure & Simple SPF 50 5.0 oz aerosol sunscreen spray (Lot# TN00CJ4 and Lot# TN00BR2), Coppertone Pure & Simple Kids SPF 50 5.0 oz aerosol sunscreen spray (Lot# TN00857, Lot# TN00CJV, Lot# TN00854 and Lot# TN00855), Coppertone Pure & Simple Baby SPF 50 5.0 oz aerosol sunscreen spray (Lot# TN009GH, Lot# TN0083K and Lot# TN0083J), Coppertone Sport Mineral SPF 50 5.0 oz aerosol sunscreen spray (Lot# TN008KU and Lot# TN008KV) and Travel-size Coppertone Sport Spray SPF 50 1.6 oz aerosol sunscreen spray (Lot# TN00BU3).

Benzene is classified as a human carcinogen, according to the press release. Exposure to benzene can occur through inhalation, oral and skin and it could, depending on the level and extent of exposure, result in an increased risk of cancers including leukemia, blood cancer of the bone marrow and other blood disorders, which can be life-threatening.

To date, Coppertone has not received any reports of adverse events related to this recall.

“Daily exposure to benzene at the levels detected in these affected Coppertone aerosol sunscreen spray products would not be expected to cause adverse health consequences based on generally accepted exposure modeling by numerous regulatory agencies,” the press release said.

However, consumers should contact their physician or healthcare provider if they have experienced any problems that may be related to using these aerosol sunscreen spray products.

The voluntarily recalled sunscreen spray products are packaged in aerosol cans. The products were distributed nationally in the United States through various retailers. Consumers should stop using these specific Coppertone aerosol sunscreen spray products and dispose of them appropriately, according to the press release.

Consumers may contact 1-888-921-1537 or access www.sunscreenrecall2021.com to request a product refund and for additional information.
