Ikea bib recallA snap that can present a choking hazard to infants and young children has led to an IKEA bib recall, according to a recent notice released by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

According to the CPSC report issued on Oct. 8, 2019, the recall includes MATVRÅ bibs, sold in a two pack for infant use. The bibs come in red with yellow seams and blue with green seams.

The bibs have MATVRÅ, IKEA, and the IKEA logo printed on labels on the back of the bib and were made in Vietnam.

Two incidents in which the snap came off of the bibs were reported, leading to the IKEA bib recall. According to reports, the snaps that are done up at the back of the neck can detach.

The bibs were sold at IKEA stores and online from August until September of this year for $2. Approximately 7,000 IKEA bibs were sold, according to an NBC News affiliate.

Consumers who purchased the bibs are encouraged to dispose of them. According to the CSPC notice, consumers can obtain a refund for the affected products from any IKEA store. Consumers can visit the IKEA recall website by clicking here or call 888-966-4532 with questions.

IKEA Recalls

In addition to the IKEA bib recall, the Swiss home goods and furniture store has recalled a number of other products, from light fixtures, to pet water dishes, to a chocolate spread. Most infamously, IKEA recalled a series of cabinets and dressers due to a serious tip-over hazard.

The MALM dresser recall came after several reports of young children being hurt and even killed after the dresser tipped over on them. The dressers were reportedly prone to tipping over, especially when the drawers are opened or the furniture is climbed.

Further, none of the MALM dresser units met industry standards for chests or dressers that require a unit to stay upright when a 50 lb. weight is hung from the top open dresser.

Other Recalls Affecting Children’s Products

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has also recently issued recall notices for a variety of products. This year alone there have been recalls issued for children’s pajamas and knit dolls.

According to the CPSC website, “[t]he U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death associated with the use of thousands of types of consumer products under the agency’s jurisdiction.”

Consumers pay more than $1 trillion each year due to deaths, injuries, and property damage from consumer product incidents, according to the agency.

“CPSC is committed to protecting consumers and families from products that pose a fire, electrical, chemical or mechanical hazard,” continues the agency site. “CPSC’s work to help ensure the safety of consumer products – such as toys, cribs, power tools, cigarette lighters and household chemicals -– contributed to a decline in the rate of deaths and injuries associated with consumer products over the past 40 years.”
