A new baby formula lawsuit claims Nara Organics infant formula purchased from Target was contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, sickening infants in Washington and two other states.
Plaintiffs Jin Nam and Jisun Lee filed the lawsuit against Nara Organics, Target and multiple John Doe defendants on July 23 in Washington federal court.
According to the Target lawsuit, Nam’s infant son was hospitalized after consuming Nara Organics infant formula that was contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a toxin that attacks the body’s nerves and can lead to difficulty breathing, muscle paralysis and even death.
Nam claims that Nara Organics and Target, which sold the infant formula, are responsible for his son’s injuries. The lawsuit alleges that the companies failed to adequately test the formula for Clostridium botulinum and that they knew or should have known about the risk of contamination.
The lawsuit seeks damages for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other losses incurred by the plaintiffs as a result of their son’s illness. The plaintiffs are also seeking compensation for future medical care and ongoing monitoring of their son’s health.
CDC announced Nara Organics infant formula sickened four infants
The Target lawsuit comes after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced a multistate outbreak of infant botulism linked to Nara Organics infant formula.
The FDA and CDC said that four infants in three states — California, Pennsylvania and Washington — were hospitalized after consuming the formula.
Nara Organics recalled the affected formula on June 13, 2026. The recall involved 16 lot codes of Nara Organics Whole Milk Infant Formula, which was sold online and at Target stores nationwide.
Nam’s lawsuit claims that the recall was too late to prevent his son’s illness. The lawsuit alleges that Nara Organics knew or should have known about the risk of contamination before distributing the formula and failed to take adequate steps to ensure the formula was safe for infants to consume.
The Target lawsuit further claims Nara Organics falsely advertised its infant formula as “fully FDA-approved” and promoted “rigorous safety standards in every batch,” allegedly misleading consumers into believing the product had received governmental safety vetting.
The lawsuit seeks to hold Nara Organics and Target accountable for the injuries the plaintiffs allege their son suffered after consuming the infant formula.
Target is also facing a class action lawsuit alleging it knew its Up & Up baby wipes were contaminated with life-threatening bacteria, yet continued selling the products before issuing a voluntary recall.
