The Ikea Malm dresser is still inside millions of homes, despite the fact that it was recalled twice and millions of children could be at risk of serious injuries. Multiple deaths have already been reported from parents whose toddlers suffered fatal injuries when this chest of drawers fell over.

The Swedish furniture chain launched a recall that affected more than 17 million of the Ikea Malm dresser models last fall. This was the second recall of that furniture. At that time, at least eight children were reportedly fatally injured by the units, and all of them were toddlers.

There has been a great deal of media attention associated with the Ikea Malm dresser. Unfortunately, many parents still remain unaware of its risks. A furniture or TV tip over is a serious and common problem throughout the United States.

A child is injured approximately every half hour associated with a tipover accident, and on average one child suffers fatal injuries every ten days because of these accidents. Safety advocates and experts in the field argue that regulators and furniture manufacturers have not done much to protect American children, and in particular toddlers, from tipovers that could claim their lives.

Many of the children who tried to climb the dresser may easily tip it over on top of themselves before parents have an opportunity to respond and save the child’s life. That’s why many safety advocates are calling for a faster recall process that would allow for parents to become aware of these issues as soon as possible.

The Ikea Malm dresser recall affects their 3, 4, 5, and 6 drawer units of dressers and chest in a very popular line that was manufactured until June 2016.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, none of those recalled drawers or chests met American Society for Testing and Materials safety standards. A dresser or chest that is bigger than 30 inches high must sit upright when a 50-pound weight is hanging from an opened drawer.

This is equivalent to the weight of a small child. Many of the products that are sold throughout the United States are not subjected to these standards because many of the standards outside of medical devices, cars, and drugs are voluntary.

A family of three boys ultimately received a $50 million settlement as a result of the Ikea Malm dresser tipping over. Ikea agreed as part of the settlement to sell only drawers or chests that meet the voluntary standards. Anyone whose child has been critically injured in such an accident may be eligible to recover compensation.
