America is a nation of drivers. A recent Gallup poll found that 83 percent of U.S. residents drive regularly and 64 percent drive every day. Every one of them depends on their car, truck, or SUV to get them where they need to go. Safely.

Stalling out on the road because of a faulty fuel pump — like the ones Honda is recalling for certain Honda Accords — puts drivers at risk.

Honda Accord Fuel Pump Recall Overview

For the second time in two years, Honda has issued a worldwide recallof some of its most popular models because of problems with their fuel pumps – the part that moves gasoline from the tank to the engine.

The latest Honda Accord fuel pump recall was issued in early June and also affects some late-model Civics and Acuras. Car and Driver reported that the recall impacts 1.4 million vehicles worldwide, with 136,057 in the U.S. Honda is the parent company of Acura.

Although Honda says it has not received reports of accidents or injuries caused by the fuel pump problem, the faulty part can lead to unexpected stalling while driving.

Autoblog reports that the recall applies to select 2018-2019 Honda Accords, Civic hatchbacks, Civic type Rs and HR-Vs, 2019-2020 Insights, and 2019 Fits, as well as 2018-2019 Acura NSXs, 2019 RDXs, RLXs, and RLXs Sport Hybrid models.

What Are the Signs of a Faulty Fuel Pump?

A car’s engine needs gas to run and the fuel pump is responsible for moving the gas from the tank to the engine. When a fuel pump malfunctions, the engine may not get enough gas to run properly, or at all.

The driver of a car with a faulty fuel pump will likely first notice the engine running “rough.” Running rough is a general term to describe various symptoms, including shaking, knocking, or making unusual noises. The car’s check engine light may also illuminate and in extreme cases, the vehicle may stall out, possibly while in motion.

Stalling is one of the biggest problems associated with the faulty fuel pump, according to reports about the Honda Accord fuel pump recall. Unexpected stalling, while the vehicle is in motion or at a standstill in traffic, puts the driver at risk and could cause an accident.

Why Was There a Honda Accord Fuel Pump Recall?

The problem with the fuel pumps in question is that they were exposed to solvents during production for so long that they became susceptible to surface cracking and fuel absorption, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. Those flaws can lead to the fuel pumps’ impellers becoming warped and ultimately failing.

In February 2019, Honda was forced to issue a similar recall of Accords manufactured between 2015 and 2017, when it was discovered that sodium particulates in certain lower grade fuels was adhering to internal components in the fuel pumps and compromising their performance. The issue was especially problematic in the summer months in southern states due to higher temperatures, according to MotorSafety.org.

Can You File a Honda Accord Lawsuit?

Consumers affected by the Honda Accord fuel pump recall may have legal recourse to seek compensation. Participating in a civil lawsuit could result in damages being awarded to cover any costs of injuries caused by the recall. Consulting a qualified attorney is the best way for a consumer to know if a claim is possible.
