The Hyundai recall was announced on May 16, following an alert from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The recall affects 54,337 Hyundai Elantra hybrid cars manufactured between 2024 and 2026.
The primary issue involves the hybrid power control unit, which may overheat and increase the risk of a fire, according to the NHTSA.
Hyundai to roll out free software update for Elantra hybrid vehicles
Hyundai is taking proactive steps to address the potential fire hazard by offering a free software update at dealerships for affected vehicles.
Owners of the recalled Elantra hybrid vehicles are encouraged to visit their local Hyundai dealership to have the HPCU software updated at no cost. The recall notice emphasizes the importance of this update to mitigate the fire risk.
Hyundai plans to notify vehicle owners by mail starting July 13 to ensure they are aware of the recall and the necessary steps to take. In the meantime, owners can contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460 for further information and assistance.
The recall notice also mentions that Elantra hybrid owners can search their car’s vehicle identification number on the NHTSA website to see if they are affected.
Hyundai says it has not received any reports of injuries related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the Elantra recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
Last month, Hyundai recalled more than 94,000 Genesis and GV80 vehicles due to concerns about a potential fuel leak that could lead to engine fires.
