Hyundai has issued a recall for more than 421,000 vehicles, including the 2025-2026 models of Santa Cruz, Tucson, Tucson Hybrid and Tucson Plug-In Hybrid.
The recall addresses a software defect in the front cameras that could lead to premature activation of the forward collision avoidance system, resulting in unexpected braking.
The issue arises from the software in the front cameras, which may inadvertently trigger the forward collision avoidance system, causing the brakes to engage without warning. According to the Hyundai recall, this unexpected braking significantly increases the risk of a crash.
To date, Hyundai has received four crash reports allegedly related to the issue, resulting in four injuries.
Drivers urged to update software as soon as possible
The Hyundai recall notice advises vehicle owners to address the recall promptly to prevent potential accidents.
Hyundai has committed to updating the front camera software free of charge. Owners of the affected vehicles will receive notification letters starting July 17, advising them to contact their local dealers for the necessary software update.
Vehicle owners can also reach out to Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460 for further assistance. Hyundai’s internal recall number for this issue is 302.
The recall affects a significant number of vehicles, highlighting the potential widespread impact of the software defect. The vehicle identification numbers involved in this recall are also searchable on the NHTSA website.
Hyundai says it has received reports of four alleged crashes and injuries related to the recall so far. The company is not currently facing legal action over the recall, but Top Class Actions follows recalls closely as they sometimes lead to class action lawsuits.
In a recent Hyundai class action lawsuit, the automaker is facing allegations it continued to market and sell Palisade vehicles without repairing defective side curtain airbags even after issuing a recall in January 2026.
