What is the Mazda CX-90 steering lawsuit investigation about?

Owners and lessees of 2024 and 2025 Mazda CX-90 vehicles are joining a class action lawsuit investigation involving reports of persistent steering issues. Some consumers allege that Mazda’s recall repairs did not fully resolve the reported problem.

These claims argue that:

  • Certain Mazda CX-90 vehicles may contain a defect in the electric power steering system that can cause “sticky steering,” making the steering wheel harder to turn or requiring more effort to steer the vehicle.
  • These sticky steering issues may affect vehicle handling and control, potentially creating safety concerns for drivers and passengers.
  • Mazda’s January 2024 recall remedy, which involved repairs to the steering assembly, may not have fully resolved the reported issue.
  • These problems have also been reported in 2025 model year Mazda CX-90 vehicles and plug-in hybrid versions, raising questions about whether the issue has been fully resolved.

Attorneys are continuing to investigate potential Mazda lawsuit claims on behalf of consumers who experienced reported steering problems.

Mazda recall and why it may not have resolved reported steering issues

In January 2024, Mazda issued Recall 6524A for 2024 Mazda CX-90 vehicles after identifying a problem within the electric power steering system.

Mazda’s recall remedy included:

  • Replacing a spring in the electric power steering assembly
  • Regreasing steering system components
  • Reassembling the steering motor

Although the original Mazda recall primarily involved certain 2024 CX-90 vehicles, similar steering-related complaints have been reported in 2025 Mazda CX-90 vehicles, including plug-in hybrid models.

Despite the recall, some Mazda CX-90 owners and lessees continue to report sticky steering and other steering-related concerns after receiving recall-related repairs. These reports have raised questions about whether the remedy fully addressed the issue.

As a result, attorneys investigating potential Mazda class action claims are reviewing consumer reports of steering problems despite receiving recall-related repairs.

How Mazda CX-90 sticky steering can impact drivers

Drivers experiencing sticky steering in a Mazda CX-90 may face more than a mechanical inconvenience. Reported steering issues can affect vehicle handling, posing safety concerns, incurring unexpected expenses and disrupting daily life.

  • Increased Safety Risk: Reported sticky steering issues may affect vehicle handling and control, potentially increasing the risk of a crash. Federal investigators have reviewed reports related to the issue, including at least two reported crashes.
  • Financial Losses: Some owners and lessees may incur out-of-pocket expenses related to repeat repair visits, towing, rental vehicles or other transportation needs.
  • Loss of Vehicle Use: Ongoing steering problems and repair-related downtime may leave consumers without reliable transportation for extended periods.

For some consumers, the combination of safety concerns, repair costs and vehicle downtime may significantly impact their daily lives.

What Mazda CX-90 owners are saying

Some Mazda CX-90 owners have submitted complaints to the NHTSA describing sticky steering and other steering-related concerns.

One owner reported:

“My vehicle has had the steering recall performed. However, I have an issue where the steering is becoming very sticky, mostly when turning left. For example, on an interstate clover leaf where steering angle is held constant for a short period of time, the steering feels stuck and requires extra effort to overcome that stuck point. It’s alarming. This appears to be getting worse over the past few months.” — NHTSA Complaint 2196273, Apr. 13, 2026

Another driver shared a similar experience:

“On multiple occasions, while I am driving on the freeway, the steering will randomly pull in the opposite direction of the turn that I am on. Or if the pavement is uneven, it will hit the bump and stick and get harder to steer or pull one way or the other. I have been in 3 near accidents at freeway speeds. I have taken it to the dealer, and they say they can not replicate it, so they are not fixing it or addressing my concerns. There are no warning lights and no warning when it is going to happen, so I have to grip the steering wheel tightly with both hands to prevent from being pulled or pushed into an accident. It has already been recalled once for this same behavior.” — NHTSA Complaint 2197303, Apr. 16, 2026

These firsthand accounts illustrate the concerns some consumers have reported regarding sticky steering in the Mazda CX-90, as well as the risk that it poses to drivers and passengers.
