What is a Volkswagen TSI engine?

A recent vehicle defect lawsuit filed against Volkswagen claims that several vehicles manufactured by the company may contain defective engines. The allegedly defective engine is the TSI engine, and may have been installed in thousands of vehicles manufactured in 2018 and 2019.

About the Volkswagen TSI Engine Lawsuit

Named plaintiff Kate C. obtained her Volkswagen Tiguan in early 2019 in Naples, Fla. Kate claims that prior to leasing the vehicle, she researched the VW Tiguan online and spoke with VW sales associates about the SUV’s features. Although she believed the Tiguan to be a safe primary vehicle for her to lease, Kate claims that within a week of taking delivery of the SUV, she experienced a concerning event. According to Kate, she was performing a U-turn in the vehicle when it suddenly and unintentionally stalled.

Unintended and sudden stalling may be dangerous, especially if it occurs when the vehicle is being driven at high speeds or is near other vehicles on a highway. Losing control of a vehicle may be a scary experience, and could result in nearby vehicles colliding with the vehicle experiencing the defect resulting in a car accident.

Following the stall, Kate brought her VW Tiguan into the dealership, where a computer analysis was performed on the car. According to Kate, she was informed that her vehicle was operating correctly and there was nothing wrong with it. However. Kate claims that she continued to experience the issue with stalling. According to her, the vehicle would frequently stall when she slowed down for traffic lights, and she was often required to restart the SUV in order to continue driving.

Are the Volkswagen TSI engines dangerous? In early March 2019 after her vehicle once again stalled during a U-turn, Kate claims that she called Volkswagen and was offered a credit of $5,000 towards the lease of a new vehicle. As Kate believed that her VW Tiguan was not safe to drive due to its repeated stalling, she returned the SUV to the dealership. However, she claims that her local dealership refused to honor her $5,000 credit. She went ahead with returning her VW Tiguan anyway, and was charged a $3,000 lease termination fee, in addition to the loss of her $2,500 deposit.

According to Kate, she contacted Volkswagen several times prior to returning her vehicle to complain about the ongoing stalling issue. She claims that she also submitted complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Florida Attorney General’s Office, and her U.S. Senator. As she has been unable to recover the costs associated with surrendering her vehicle and believes that she was sold a defective VW Tiguan, Kate filed a lawsuit against the auto manufacturer seeking compensation.

The vehicles covered by the lawsuit include the 2018 and 2019 Volkswagen GTI, Golf, Jetta, Passat, and Tiguan, which come with a 2.0L TSI engine. According to Kate, this engine is defective and is the likely cause of unintended stalling.

What are TSI Engines?

TSI engines, or turbocharged stratified injection engines, are engines that offer high performance with low fuel consumption. These engines are meant to be fuel efficient, similar to a hybrid electric vehicle. They may get better gas mileage than vehicles with traditional gas engines, while still allowing drivers to maintain high speeds over long distances.

If you own a 2018 or 2019 Volkswagen GTI, Golf, Jetta, Passat, or Tiguan, you may be able to speak with an experienced attorney about your legal options. Even if you have not experienced unexpected stalling, your vehicle may be equipped with a potentially defective TSI engine.

Kate’s Volkswagen Lawsuit is Case No: 2:20-cv-17837, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.
