  • Where: The recall is nationwide in the United States.

Tesla is recalling 26,681 2021-2022 Model 3, Model S and Model X, and 2020-2022 Model Y vehicles due to a software issue that means windshields may not defrost properly.

In a recall notice, the company says the issue is caused by a software error that can cause a valve in the heat pump to open unintentionally and trap the refrigerant inside the evaporator, resulting in decreased defrosting performance.

“As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 103, ‘Windshield Defrosting and Defogging Systems,’” the notice says.

The company says that decreased defrosting performance may reduce the driver’s visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.

Tesla will perform an over-the-air software update free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Apr. 1, 2022.

Recall Latest In String Of Tesla Recalls

The recall is the latest in a string of Tesla recalls. In the first week of February, Tesla announced two separate recalls. First, it recalled more than 817,000 vehicles after discovering they may contain faulty seat belt chimes meant to warn drivers and front passengers if they are not buckled up.

Then, days later, the company recalled 53,822 of its 2016-2022 Model S and Model X, 2017-2022 Model 3 and 2020-2022 Model Y vehicles due to the vehicles’ rolling stop feature in its self-driving software, which allows the vehicles to travel through an all-way stop intersection without stopping.

Those recalls followed the company’s largest yet in December of last year where it recalled 475,318 vehicles. 356,309 of those were its Model 3, and 119,109 were Model S. The trouble with the Model 3s was with a faulty rearview camera, which could possibly fail due to issues with its harness, and the issue with the Model S vehicles was more severe, due to a faulty front trunk latch which could possibly open while driving.

Although none of the recalls have ended in legal action, Tesla is facing a class action lawsuit filed by a former Tesla Energy worker who claims she faced racial and sexual discrimination while working as a solar panel installer for the Tesla subsidiary.

Shanel Dickson, a Black woman, claims her white supervisor regularly called her the n-word and other racial slurs during her time working as a roofer in Santa Clara County. Dickson claims she also faced “inappropriate sexual comments” from her supervisor and was discriminated against by being given a lighter duty of work than her all-male work colleagues.
