Honda infotainment class action overview:

  • Who: A Honda Civic driver is suing American Honda Motor Co Inc and Honda Motor Co Ltd.
  • Why: The plaintiff says 2016-2020 Honda Civic vehicles were equipped with faulty infotainment systems.
  • Where: The Honda infotainment class action was filed in a California federal court.

Honda sold 2016-2020 Honda Civic vehicles equipped with a faulty infotainment system, a new class action lawsuit alleges.

Plaintiff Constance Chiulli filed the class action lawsuit against American Honda Motor Co Inc (AHM) and Honda Motor Co Ltd. (HMC) Oct. 19 in a California federal court, alleging violations of California consumer laws and federal warranty laws.

She’s suing on behalf of anyone in the United States who purchased or leased any 2016-2020 Honda Civic vehicles equipped with an infotainment system.

According to the lawsuit, the infotainment system in the 2016-2020 Honda Civic is defective in that it malfunctions, freezes, or crashes, which then causes the inoperability of one or more features including the navigation, heating, air conditioning, radio, or bluetooth.

“Because the Infotainment System controls myriad vehicle functions, the Defect causes a wide array of failures,” the lawsuit states.

Among the most concerning is the failure of the back-up camera images to accurately depict the conditions behind the vehicle, she states.

“Drivers, including Plaintiff Chiulli, become accustomed to the driver assist features in the infotainment system, including in particular the back-up camera and the right-side blind spot camera,” the lawsuit states.

Honda sold insufficient warranty for infotainment system, lawsuit alleges

Honda sold the vehicles with a 3-year warranty that purports to cover the infotainment system, Chiulli says.

However, owners and lessees often have complained that their infotainment systems fail and require repair or replacement both within and just outside the warranty period, she says.

“Defendants’ failure to disclose the Infotainment System Defect has caused Plaintiff and putative class members to lose the use of their Vehicles’ Infotainment Systems and/or incur costly repairs that have conferred an unjust substantial benefit upon Defendants,” the lawsuit states.

Chiulli is suing on behalf of anyone in the United States who bought or leased one of the 2016 to 2020 Honda Civics, plus a California subclass. She is suing for breach of California consumer laws, breach of warranty, fraudulent concealment and unjust enrichment.

Chiulli is seeking certification of the class action, damages, fees, costs and a jury trial. She’s also seeking a forced recall compelling Honda to fix the issue.

In January, a judge granted final approval for a $33 million settlement agreement between American Honda Motor Co. and drivers to resolve claims the company sold vehicles with malfunctioning infotainment systems.

My 2018 Honda civic sport, has had the wire harness chewed to peices from rodents. I.have been stuck not able to get my vehicle certified in my new province because I cannot afford to pay 1700 dollars to honda for a vehicle that has had soy bean wires in their wire harness. I’m told no one will cover this damage. I’m told the class action lawsuit was thrown out. How the hell does a company get away with not fixing their mistakes. Honda has completely left me in a bad situation because I owe a lot of money on this vehicle still. And I cannot afford to fix it.

  3. JAMES ELYKO says:

I have a 2016 Civic Touring. I have had issues with this since the first year after i purchased car . Always beeps and changes screens by itself. Or it will freeze . The handsfree will get locked on screen and only way to get out of it is to reboot it. Honda replaced the unit a long time ago and has updated the software several times but still doing all the same stuff

My 2016 Honda Civic’s screen went out without warning. I have lines on my screen. I took it to my local dealer in Oshkosh, WI and of course, they told me my issue was not part of the law suit. I would like to be added to this law suit. I was told it would be $1,300 to fix it.

  8. Kenneth Tan says:

I have this issue, state of Colorado. Honda Pilot 2019. Please add me to this lawsuit.

  9. Linda D. says:

My Honda CR-V 2017 has problems with the infotainment system. It is stuck on full brightness and randomly flashes through different features, then goes blank, and starts all over again. Sometimes it is rapid fire and sometimes it will randomly pop up one the screen brightness feature. It beeps every time it makes a change. There is no way to turn it off. Eventually it will freeze, making the whole system useless…no way to operate the phone, heat, music features. When the screen malfunctions, the back-up camera goes grainy and difficult to judge distance of items on the screen. Dashboard is also malfunctioning. It gives random alerts…most often it is the auto high beam not working.

We have tried the “fixes”…Klein Honda of Everett, WA replaced the infotainment system when the car was 6 months old and fixed the high beam alert. I took it back at 5 years old and they told me it would cost $1600 to investigate reported problems.

These problems are highly distracting, especially in the dark when the screen can’t be turned off. They take the drivers focus off the road. I am hopeful that Honda will own up to these problems and recall the systems.
