ford super duty truck tireA class action lawsuit claims that 2017 and 2018 Ford F-350 Super Duty trucks possess a defect that causes their tires to leak.

Plaintiffs James Collins and Ken Newman say they own Ford F-350 vehicles that possess the tire leak defect and they have to fill up the tires almost daily.

In Collins’ case, he allegedly went to a Ford dealership numerous times but the dealership only offered repairs that did not address the root problem of the defect. He says that he then hired a third-party dealership to fix the problem, but the wheels of his vehicle are still affected by the defect.

Likewise, Newman says he complained to Ford about the defect, but the dealerships did not remedy the problem. He claims that the dealership told him that the repairs to the wheels would not be covered under warranty. Newman says that he then had to pay out-of-pocket for repairs done by third-party mechanics. He claims that like Collins, his vehicle is still affected by the defect.

The Ford leaking tires class action lawsuit alleges that the tires of the Ford F-350 trucks leak because of a design defect in the wheels. The wheels reportedly have a valve stem which is affixed to a sensor and which is the point at which pressurized air is added to the tire. The Ford class action lawsuit says that the tire valve stems are made of a steel alloy, while the wheels are made of an aluminum alloy.

The Ford class action lawsuit goes on to say that the two metals are incompatible, because the contact between the steel valve stem and the aluminum wheel causes both to corrode where the two elements connect. This corrosion allegedly causes leaks, which result in the tires losing air pressure continuously. The customers claim that this is why they have to fill up their tires almost daily.

The plaintiffs allege that low tire pressure is a serious problem because it can take a toll on fuel economy, it can reduce the life of the tires, it can affect vehicle handling, and it can ultimately affect the safety of the passengers.

The customers claim that tires with low pressure can deflate or blow out instantaneously, which can cause the drivers to lose control of the vehicle.

The Ford class action lawsuit states that Ford offers a repair for the problem, but knows that the repair is ineffective. According to the Ford tire pressure class action lawsuit, the repair offered does not address the root issue of the defect — the corrosion and tire deflation.

My 2019 F-350 DRW also has the same issue – i am 3 months outside the 3yr warranty window. I have worked with my dealer on the air leak as well. My two rear outside rims have been replaced twice and the fronts once due to corrosion around the tire valve. I was proactive and addressed the issue regarding the Galvanic corrosion during the 1st year and switch the tire valves to a Ford hi performance black rubber tire valve – pull through which is used on the Mustang (part nbr ava on request) -> this did not stop the corrosion around the tire valve the next year and air leaks! I surmise that the corrosion is due to a manufacturing / engineering process issue – although the % of corrosion was diminished it was still visible and air leaks continued – perhaps the clear coat is not inside the tire valve hole to the proper thickness or at all? has anyone determined that on a new rim?
-> I am ready to look into getting custom rims and tires stay w rubber pull through valves and hope that fixes it – any thoughts

  2. Benjamin Martin says:

Since September of 2017 my rims have been replaced approximately 10 times. Each time after a few months it is the same problem. The wheels corrode and leak.

  3. John Cook says:

My 2018 also has has this problem since it was new its had I think about 6 or 7 replaced and now it needs another one with approximately 22000 miles on it

  4. Rod Brady says:

35,000 miles on my 2017 F350 DRW Superduty. Two tires have had this issue. Ford dealership rebuilt one TPMS sensor and valve stem. The service advisor said that there is no fix for this problem.

  5. Dennis Crouse says:

About 2 years after purchasing my 2017 F350 dually, the right front tire went low. I took it to a tire dealer nearby and they said it was leaking at the valve stem and it appeared ti have a small crack. I got a new one shipped over night at my expense because Ford said the warranty didn’t cover rims. Two years later, it and a back rim leak significantly requiring air every week. An additional 2 rear rims leak, but much slower. I have had the valve stems replaced at least 3 times without any success. I currently have about 50000 miles on it. Ford needs to step up and make good on this defect.

  6. Robert Bray says:

My 2017 F350 Dually has this issue. I’m constantly toping off the air pressure in my tires, front and rear. Ford needs to step up, own the issue, and come up with a solution! I wonder if this is an issue with the F450 Dually as well.

    1. Dale says:

Yes the 450 duely has the same problem mines a 2011 the aluminum is low grade and won’t stand up to the elements of nature
I’ve checked with multiple tire shops and have been told that the metal valve stem that tightens from inside works the best but not always

    2. Joe Bouchard says:

I love my 19 f350 dually. But I’m extremely tired of adding air and valve replacements. My dealership has been good to me, but it’s seams like an air compressor is life support for my tires. I believe Ford knows because my ford app tells me to add air all the time.

  7. Neal stevenson says:

Same.issue 2019 ford f350 dually. I have to add air almost every day. I pull a large horse trailer and a fifth wheel camper and this issue is very dangerous. I have Had the valve stems replaced 3 times and recently had new rims on the front and outside rims on the back. Leaks now worse than ever. I should not have to put air in the tires every day on an $80,000 truck

  8. Deborah Pearce says:

I have a lincoln Mark LT truck. Tires leak constantly. One or the other of all 4 go flat once a week. Always a different one.

  9. Kasey McGrady says:

I have a brand new 2020 F350 Platinum dually with 14,500 miles. I have had a slow leak in the front wheel for the last 4 months. Slow at fist then proceeded to get worse until I wore the outside Tread on a long trip. I took it to the dealership realizing the stem was leaking and it took them two tries to seal it up. Two weeks later it started leaking faster again so I took it to an independent tire shop and it took them three attempts even swapping it out for a rubber stem and still could not get the Valve stem to seat. I also had on that tire a metal tick sound at 35 miles an hour that went from passenger side to driver side when they rotated the tires. I then took it back to the Ford dealership in which it took two more attempts to seat the valve stem which lasted all of about five hours. My conclusion is that Alcoa poorly machined the wheel or the seat for the valve stem Where it rests against the wheel causing an improper seat and will not seal under load As well as the The wheel is out of spec and is not machined properly. so between the the valve stem leak the metal tick sound (which I think is the wheel hitting the back of the caliper due to tight tolerances and wheel milled improperly) the wheels are faulty and quality control is poor coming from from Alcoa and Ford has realized that recalling all these alloy rims will be very expensive.

  10. Jeff Munn says:

I had a 2017 F350 Dually. Had to get rid of it because of the re-occuring wheel leak. In 2-1/2 years I had 14 new valve stems and 4 new wheesl installed on the truck and still had problems with them leaking. When I sold the truck it only had 18000 km’s on it, I did not want to use it because every time I needed to take it somewhere I knew I had to take the compressor out and fill tires. At the end, my dealer threw their arms up in the air and said there was nothing they could do for me. Funny thing is, Ford knew they had the problem in 2017 but kept putting the same wheels on the truck for the next three years.

    1. bill lemanske says:

Same here 2018 duelly tires still leaking after new rims and multiple valve stems 23000 miles.
