Honda Infotainment Systems Class Action Settlement Overview:

  • Who: Final approval has been given for a $33 million settlement between American Honda Motor Co. and a class of drivers.
  • Why: The settlement resolves claims Honda sold certain Honda Odyssey and Pilot vehicles containing malfunctioning infotainment systems.
  • Where: The class action lawsuit was settled in California federal court.

A judge has granted final approval for a $33 million settlement agreement between American Honda Motor Co. and drivers to resolve claims the company sold vehicles with malfunctioning infotainment systems.

The final approval ended almost three years of litigation between Honda and a class of drivers led by plaintiffs Lesley and Tom Conti, Law360 reports.

The judge ruled there was no evidence of collusion or conflict of interest and that the deal was “fair, reasonable and adequate.”

Four objectors to the settlement were shot down by the judge, however, including two who no longer owned the affected vehicles, one who claimed Honda’s repair policy was defective and one who brought up unrelated malfunctions.

In addition to the funds, the settlement includes warranty extensions from three to five years and from 36,000 miles to 60,000.

Agreement Includes Technician Training, Engineering Expert To Oversee Software Updates

The agreement also includes training for Honda’s authorized technicians and stipulates that an engineering expert will oversee the ongoing software updates Honda is implementing to try and resolve the issue.

The Contis brought the lawsuit against Honda in 2019, claiming that infotainment systems built into model year 2018-19 Honda Odysseys and 2019 Honda Pilots would malfunction.

The malfunction included cracking or knocking noises, incorrectly working backup cameras and GPS and radio systems that became disabled, according to the class action lawsuit.

The lawsuit was trimmed slightly last year to include Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act claims and allegations that Honda misrepresented the infotainment systems.

The settlement was originally announced in May of last year, with preliminary approval granted in June, Law360 reports. The Contis’ push for final approval came in December of last year.

The plaintiffs are represented by Steve W. Berman, Sean R. Matt and Christopher R. Pitoun of Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP and Jeffrey S. Goldenberg and Todd Naylor of Goldenberg Schneider LPA.

The Honda Infotainment Systems Class Action Lawsuit is Conti, et al. v. American Honda Motor Co., Inc., Case No. 2:19-cv-02160, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

I just bought a 2020 Pilot EX-L, about 10 days ago with 26k miles on it. I even bought extended warranty although it’s still part of the original warranty for another 9k miles or 9 months. The cracking sounds started 2 days ago. The infotainment system once got to a point where it said no audio device found irrespective of the source I selected (Android Auto, FM etc.).

I am thinking of trading it in within 10 days of buying. Will obviously end up losing some money if I do that. And I really don’t want to because I love everything else about this car.

    1. Lori says:

They do know how to fix this now and will fix under warranty. I would get it fixed asap and see that it worked while still under warranty.

2018 Honda Pilot EX AWD makes knocking/loud clicking noise when applying breaks. Took it back to the dealership several times and they told me that it’s “normal” that all Hondas do that!!! I’ve owned many Hondas- not one made this sound.

Story time… I needed to trade in my Civic for a family vehicle because we were getting ready to move across country (driving). I had looked at many other vehicles prior to finding this Pilot.

Now this is where it starts, I walked into the dealership and told them that I wanted to trade my civic in. They got the paperwork started right away, but then I was having a hard time finding a vehicle that suited us. That’s when I saw this Pilot parked next to my car, I told my husband that I wanted something like that. The salesman said “that’s available, just came in today” it was dirty and no price on it or anything. I asked if I could test drive it and he said he couldn’t allow that yet because it hadn’t been inspected, cleaned or any of that sort so I told the man that I would come back tomorrow and asked for my keys… that’s when he said “I can’t let you take the civic, it’s no longer your car, you sold it to us…” um excuse me, no I didn’t, why would I do that without having a replacement vehicle or where’s the money for it? He then told me what I signed was a trade in agreement. He told me it was an appraisal form and something to run my credit score. So here I am, STUCK. Can’t take MY car and can’t take anything on the lot, I was forced into buying something from them whether I wanted it or not. Told them I wanted the Pilot, had very little miles on it and it was well kept. He said, “let me see if the guys can do a point check on it and vacuum it out for you” after waiting a very long time, they came back and said it was ready to go, bring it back in 2 days and we can detail it for you, you also have 7 days to let us know if you experience any problems with it. The very next day I called them telling them about this snap/knock sound every time I push the breaks, they told me they would check it out when I brought it in for detail. When I took it in, they said it was fine, they couldn’t get it to make the sound, there’s nothing wrong. Well about a week goes by and the sound is getting worse, louder and I can feel the vibration of it under my petal, took it back they said they still can’t get it to make the same noise and they don’t see anything wrong with it. It all looks normal. At that point I was getting very frustrated so I took it to a real mechanic, told them what was up told them what Honda said and they were completely shocked that they would turn me away saying that nothing was wrong with it. He told me to take it back there and speak to the lead mechanic, I told him to get in the car and I’ll get it to make the noise, he finally heard it, he said “oh that?!, that’s normal! All newer Hondas do that.” I looked him dead in the eye and told him that my 2019 civic didn’t make this sound, that it’s indeed NOT normal. He insisted that it was, said there’s nothing they can do to fix the problem but they can make it quieter for $500. At that point I am completely LIVID. Nothing came of it, I still have the car, more issues are going on and I have only had this car since August 2021. Oh, i just recently learned that they also screwed me over on the price… 38.9k (the 2022 is 39k) and was also forced to buy extended warranty, but yet they refuse to fix it cause “nothing” is wrong. I can’t even trade it in because I’ll be 10-15k upside down. There’s more to the story but it would take all day to type. How do I go about suing them? Where do I start?

Interesting. I bought my 2018 Honda Pilot in November 2019. Everything was fine.. Ever since I took it back in that following March for the usual warranty upkeep maintenance/inspection appt, it makes a lound clunk when I brake hard every so often. Right after or while I press the brake pedal, It sounds like a deep loud knock/clunk immediately before the brake fully engages, and it sounds lake it’s coming from the back brakes? Is this the same sound and style of the noise you’re experiencing as well? They told me they didn’t hear anything and all looks well, but it NEVER did this before, and of course it doesn’t do it when I need it to so I can show someone!!

I have a 2019 odyssey that has this very problem. I’ve had the dealership look at it a couple of times and they can’t find anything wrong. My infotainment system goes black and I have nothing- not even my backup camera. It does this intermittently and it’s very frustrating. It also drives terrible- hard shifting, high idling, slow acceleration, etc. I wish I could get rid of this car!!

    1. Christy J Kirkland says:

Mine does the exact same thing always sounds like the car wires are sizzling or popping! Honda swears I’m crazy!

      1. Emily says:

        Same !!!! So unbelievably frustrating.

  4. Nicole R says:

I have a 2021 ex-l pilot awd and having some of the same exact issues as what has been mentioned here. When CarPlay is connected (* I have the latest version of IOS and new apple cord by the way), occasionally I hear crackling and the music will not play that is connected nor can I make or receive phone calls. During that time, when I am driving, I cannot adjust the volume (it says audio off) on my steering wheel but I can adjust it manually from the touch screen even though my music and sound will not play if there is too much crackling. I have a new vehicle I purchased in 2021 and only have 10,500 miles on it. This is unacceptable and a new lawsuit needs to be brought up to include 2021 pilot also.

Please help me. My 2013 Honda Pilot caught on fire and was totaled. It was parked in a parking lot. It started from the right rear side of the car. I changed the insurance to liability only due to COVId and I was not longer traveling for work and getting the mileage. I was going to change it back to full coverage after the order to stay indoors. I still do not have a vehicle. I want Honda to at least give me 1/2 the value so I can get a new car!!!!!

    1. Dana says:

We bought this car used and out of warranty a year ago and are having all of these issues. Our car is in the shop for the 4th time in 3 weeks worse than before they started “fixing” it. Popping sounds, screens shutting down, now the dvd player doesn’t work and cabin watch has a lighting issue. We have paid about $1000 so far, Honda has covered some of the other repairs thankfully. Also, a few months ago my car stopped in the middle of the road at a stoplight with me and my 3 year old in the car and wouldn’t start. Had to replace the battery for that. Is there any hope for us?

  6. Laura Parman says:

I have the same problems with my 2019 Honda Pilot have had it to dealer 3 times was forced to buy extended warranty.

  8. Michelle Miness says:
