Mazda class action overview:

  • Who: Plaintiffs Christopher Jarvis, Christopher Bajwa, Ronald Belanger and Grant Rockwell filed a class action lawsuit against Mazda Motor of America.
  • Why: Several Mazda vehicles have a structural weakness that causes engine coolant leakage, overheating and catastrophic engine failure, the Mazda defect class action lawsuit says.
  • Where: The Mazda class action was filed in federal court in California.

A group of consumers filed a Mazda class action lawsuit alleging an engine coolant leakage problem is present in some of the automaker’s vehicles, causing overheating and then catastrophic engine failure.

The 2019-2020 Mazda CX-5 and CX-9 along with the 2018-2020 Mazda 6 vehicles with SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engines have a structural weakness at the cylinder head around the exhaust manifold that causes the issue, the Mazda class action claims.

“The sudden and unexpected catastrophic engine stalling and/or failure causes the class vehicles to unexpectedly stop, posing a danger to the drivers and occupants of the class vehicles and others who share the road with them, as other vehicles can collide with the class vehicles after they suddenly stop moving,” the Mazda defect class action lawsuit says.

Mazda engine coolant leakage problem hidden by company, class action claims

The Mazda defect has been hidden by the company, which knew about the costly issues and has not been willing to pay for repairs on the class vehicles whether under warranty or not, the Mazda class action says.

With their Mazda engine coolant leakage class action, plaintiffs Christopher Jarvis, Christopher Bajwa, Ronald Belanger and Grant Rockwell are asking for damages, compensation for the diminished value of the vehicles, out-of-pocket costs, attorneys’ fees, restitution and both injunctive and declaratory relief.

The company has continued to sell the class vehicles through authorized dealers and has failed to inform vehicle owners about the defect, the Mazda class action claims.

A separate Mazda class action lawsuit from 2023 alleges that certain vehicles have defective valve stem seals that allow oil leakage that can cause “voluminous” oil consumption, putting the vehicle at an increased risk of engine failure.

The plaintiff is represented by Alison M. Bernal of NYE, Stirling, Hale, Miller & Sweet LLP and Matthew D. Schelkopf, Joseph B. Kenney and Juliette T. Mogenson of Sauder Schelkopf LLC.

The Mazda engine coolant leakage class action lawsuit is Jarvis, et al. v. Mazda Motor of America Inc., et al., Case No.  8:24-cv-00785, in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California.

Good morning. I have a 2019 Mazda CX-5 turbo skyactive
I developed a cylinder head leak a month ago . My warranty ran out in Jan this year . So far Mazda refuses to cover this . I live in Niagara Canada
Am I able to join this class action law suit ?

  2. Kandie Fitzpatrick says:

I just bought a Mazda and it feels funny driving. What are the signs of this failure you are talking about?

  3. Joe. S. says:

My 2016 Mazda Cx-9 Has had 2 Transmissions, Its had the Head Replaced, it has Electrical issues, Its been in and out of the shop at a COMSTANT rate and I feel Mazda is Responsible. Nothing but problem after problem,Skyactive technology is GARBAGE. This is something that NEEDS to be addressed. U pay 50 thousand dollars for these cars and you expect a level of Security with It. Unacceptable!!!! And when your in a contract your Bound to it even with the issues. This is Unacceptable. Mazda needs to just Give the ppl who have issues brand new cars. Period.

  4. Brian Apple says:

My 2019 CX9 had the same issue. A couple technical service bulletins (TSB’s) identified the potential issue but my VIN was not covered in them.
This resulteD in my Skyactiv engine getting a hole in the block, after spending lots of money on coolant and mechanic fees.
Mazda corporate would not honor a warranty since I was 3k miles past warranty, even though the TSB spoke of the known issue.
The dealership where I purchased the vehicle was able to get Mazda corporate to warranty my motor “in kind” (I believe that was the verbiage used). They replaced the entire motor for less than $1000.

  5. Adrian Meredith says:

I have a 2018 Mazda cx9 and had experience this twice

  6. Tayla says:

Our 2015 Mazda CX-5 Diesel had this exact issue. We had no help resolving this issue, left to sell our car that we at the time only brought 11 months prior for 15k less than we paid for it :( very young family left with nothing. I don’t know Mazda can keep getting away with this. It’s left so many innocent families more than short on money & struggling. We can’t even afford to buy another decent car :(

  7. Steve says:

I can report from personal experience 2018 CX -5 SKYACTIVE engines experience the same defect resulting in cylinder head cracking, with massive oil leak, smoke in the cabin, etc. This is NOT limited to the CX-5 2019 / coolant. Three dozen NHTSB complaints about the cracked head oil problem for the 2018 model year alone. I’m just out of warranty and Mazda won’t help, huge expense. Owners should have been warned of this, to check for cylinder cracking if oil leaks appear, or to obtain extended warranties. Please extend the lawsuit to include 2018 VINs.

  8. Matt says:

what about the 2018 model year CX9? I own one and it had this exact failure.

  9. Jessica B McCullough says:

My 2018 Mazda 3 had a sudden catastrophic engine defect/failure that has put me in the biggest bind of my life. It’s been a complete nightmare that’s resulted in my car being stolen, losing my ability to take my fiance to the doctors to fight a incurable disease which he ultimately died from or spend time with the last year of his life, to all of my savings, being stuck in my house, losing my job, losing my ability to pay the loan, as well as my insurance, and not being able to find or track my vehicle, all the while being told even with a warranty it’s not worth fixing, all while watching the milage go up almost 6k miles since my car was stolen, and is still registered in my name. How do I join this case?
