BMW Brake Assist, Fuel Pump Recalls Overview:

  • Who: BMW, Subaru, and Toyota all announced recalls this week.
  • Why: The safety of hundreds of thousands of vehicles may be affected by one of these recalls.
  • Where: Recalls have been announced nationwide.

Automakers have issued a slew of recalls covering more than 50,000 vehicles that may have a BMW brake assist problem and 165,000 Subaru and Toyota vehicles that may stall due to a fuel pump defect.

BMW Brake Assist Recall

A software problem may affect the brake assist in more than 50,000 BMW cars and SUVs, according to a recall issued this week by the automaker.

The BMW brake assist may fail to function in certain conditions, making braking harder and increasing stopping distances, warns the automaker. Owners of vehicles affected by the BMW brake assist recall will be able to visit an authorized BMW or Toyota dealer for a free repair.

The vehicles affected by the BMW brake assist recall include:

  • 2020 BMW 540i, 540i xDrive
  • 2020-2021 BMW 745Le xDrive
  • 2020 BMW M340i, M340i xDrive
  • 2020 BMW X3 M40i
  • 2020-2021 BMW X4 M40i
  • 2019-2021 BMW Z4 M40i
  • 2020-2021 Toyota Supra

The BMW braking assist problem appears to occur when the start button is pressed two times in a row or if the brake pedal is pressed while starting the car. In either of these conditions, the engine management software may cause damage affecting the brake assist, says BMW in its recall notice.

Subaru, Toyota Fuel Pump Recall

More than 165,000 late model Subaru and Toyota vehicles may have defective fuel pumps, according to a pair of recall notices issued this week.

The automaker warns that 2018-2020 Subarus and 2018-2019 Toyota Supras, manufactured by Subaru, may stall if a low-pressure fuel pump stops operating.

Small cracks may develop in the fuel pumps of recalled vehicles, resulting in low-pressure. Early warning signs include the vehicle shuddering during use or failing to start.

“If the low pressure fuel pump becomes inoperative, the check engine warning light or malfunction indicator light may illuminate, and/or the engine may run rough. In the worst case, an inoperative fuel pump may result in the engine stalling without the ability to restart the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash,” warns Subaru in its recall notice.

The Subaru fuel pump recall affects the following vehicles:

  • 2019-2020 Ascent
  • 2018 Forester
  • 2018-2020 Impreza
  • 2018-2020 Legacy
  • 2018-2020 Outback
  • 2018-2019 BRZ
  • 2018-2019 WRX
  • 2018-2019 Toyota 86

The automaker says that owners of recalled vehicles should bring them into a Subaru or Toyota dealership for a free repair.

Top Class Actions will continue to monitor this and other auto recalls to help keep consumers informed.
