Safety Belt Recall Overview:Â Â
- Who: More than 21,000 vehicles from BMW-owned brands, including Mini, Rolls-Royce, and Toyota Supra.Â
- Why: BMW has issued a recall, warning consumers that an issue with the safety belt may make car seat installation unsafe. Â
- Where: The safety belt recall was issued for vehicles in the United States. Â
BMW AG has recalled several 2021 models, as well as the Toyota Supra, for a defective safety belt component that may affect the ability of owners to correctly install car seats in certain vehicles. Â
The recall includes BMW, Mini, and Rolls-Royce vehicles, which are brands owned by BMW, as well as the Toyota Supra, which uses a BMW design. The automatic locking device on the safety belt retractor may malfunction in vehicles manufactured between Nov 30, 2020, and Feb 12, 2021, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Â
In certain vehicles, only the front safety belts contain the defective retractor; however, in other vehicles, the back seat safety belts are affected. In most cases, experts say child car seats should be installed in the back seat. The automatic retractor is necessary to ensure the safety belt securely fastens the car seat in the vehicle, warns Consumer Reports. Â
The vehicles covered by the safety belt recall include:Â Â
- BMW 2 Series coupes and convertibles  Â
- BMW 3 Series and M3 sedans Â
- BMW 4 Series and M4 coupes Â
- BMW 5 Series sedansÂ
- BMW X1 and X2 SUVsÂ
- BMW Z4 convertiblesÂ
- Mini Cooper hatchbacks and convertiblesÂ
- Mini Clubman hatchbacksÂ

- Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUVsÂ
